This country is full of thickos.

I work in a place where I speak to the general public on a daily basis, not from one area - but from all over the country. I really am astounded by the amount of people who can't turn a computer on, are genuinely thick and completely irritating.

Anyone want to share any thick customer stories?

I spoke to an irritating guy on the phone today as i didn't know how to turn my computer on, I think been 75 may have had something to do with it and I really struggle to comprehend new technology at my age as it's changing so fast! I wonder if the irritant on the other side of the phone could help me finish building my house, the house I've built all by myself, or maybe he is just a thick retard who can only get a job answering the phone!

No this is not true, look at the Flynn effect.
Intelligence is increasing through each generation, this is also one of the reasons of grade inflation.

I am not talking about intelligence.
It should increase, everything else is, food, medicine, environmental factors, lower diseases.

I am talking about grading someone on being uninformed as opposed to stupid, grammar has reached a very poor level, in fact if you look at literacy stats in the UK, they are now falling, rather than increasing. Many many people even with our education system can perform basic math functions or tasks, yet they could tell you who's on facebook, how to download the latest isos and dvds.

The world evolves, and my points stands, there is a difference between stupid people and uninformed people.

That's a joke right?

You want to compare the number of illiterate people in the early 1900s to the level that we are now?

You're joking right?

Grammar adapts, changes and evolves, Shakespeare and Dickens probably think you're a retard too for writing this way. It has nothing to do with being being illiterate/not knowing how to write, also, it';s the internet, most people don't care how they type/text, do you think their going to give their dissertation "like dis"?

I'm sorry but 'thicko' is not the word that people need to be using here. People get angry at technology because it doesn't do what they want it to do. People are damn right rude.

One example of a call I had on 18/04/2011.

# The said the PC was broke. I asked can you tell me what happened. The woman said 'I don't know'. I then said can you tell me what you were doing. The woman replied 'oh I'm not sure'. I said said if you can't tell me what you did, I can't fix your problem. I then said 'I'm not a mind reader' The woman hung up.

I went to the office before the woman put a complaint in and said to her 'what is this' as I pointed to the keyboard, the woman said 'a keyboard'. I then said 'what is this' as I pointed to the mouse. The woman said 'a mouse'. I then said so why can't you tell me what was going wrong when you were on the phone. The woman then replied and said 'oh I couldn't be bothered'. I then said, 'oh so if I couldn't be bothered with coming to help you would that matter' or how about if I was charging you '£60.00' just for this call?. I walked away..... no complaint yet.

Bare in mind this is a 45+ woman your talking about here.

In the mean time while this thread has evolved, my neighbourhood has been overcome by 50 year olds parking for a funeral, when there is a car park < 50 metres from them.

Deuce, if you didn't know hot to turn this on, there would be something very wrong here indeed.

"Zalman reserator XT, E8500 E0, Asus P5K-e wifi premium, 4 gig Kingston HyperX DDR1066, Gigabyte 5850, Asus Xonar D2X, 22mb Be* Internet."

Turning a computer on was just an example. It's the general lack of knowledge and blatant dim-wittedness a conversation with someone can show. As previously mentioned though, Facebook is an amazing place to see just how thick people are, and not just mentally - why are all the people I went to school with now at least 15 stone?

haha, you sir are my hero, completely agree.

Maybe it's just me, but are some of the posts in here soo grammatically incorrect that they're impossible to read?

The ironing.

Grade inflation is because the exams are easy. An 'O' level from 40 years ago is harder than the equivalent of an A - Level and some of the old A-levels from the same time have harder exams than the equivalent modern degree.

Oh and just because somebody knows less in an area that you know about doesn't make them 'thickos' - pride comes before a fall. There is always somebody who will know more than you, Thicko.

Not exactly, have a look at this
http://www.lbc.co.uk/1966-maths-o-level-paper-35273
The syllabus is a bit different, but not at the same level as A level maths.
Just glancing at those questions, I can definitely solve all of them.

Do you have evidence that supports this? Daily Mail and The Sun links don't count.

When I worked for Sky I got a call from a woman that wanted help ordering a box office movie. After a little confusion we realised that she had cable, not Sky...

box office advert on cable sky channels.... which are on cable?

a lot of people aren't experts at everything, no doubt we have all asked thick questions regarding something before.

I would have said the reactions to these people were stupid, and it's their own arrogance in thinking the status quo is always correct that leads them to think that way.

Why shouldn't I be able to open a file in word? It's only because Microsoft made it's system file centric rather than work centric. What does it benefit me to know the difference between .PDF and .doc?
The distinction is meaningless when all I want to do is to open it.
Ideally the file should tell the OS what it requires for it to be opened, not for the OS to try and open it with whatever it has available.

Also with turning a PC on,
IBM used to have a big red clunky switch, you know if you have flipped that or not. Now all the buttons are stealthed?! What the hell point is there in stealthing the on/off switch?

Like it's only when you use something like an iPad for a few weeks that you realise that using a mouse to browse the web is completely unintuitive and that touching the links is faster. Think about it, the mouse is just a physical link between your hand and what you are trying to achieve, ideally just using your finger is simpler.

It's not that people are stupid, it's just that technology often forces people into understanding trivial information before they are able to use it - basically technology is dumb.
I'm happy dealing with the most obscure bit of electronics, yet when faced with the counter intuitive layout of the average photocopier, my mind goes blank. it's like I can't accept that the simplest of operations (copy paper on to paper) somehow necessitates such ridiculous obscurity in its processes.

When I posted earlier in the thread, my only issue with the situation was the user argued for ages even though I had explained in simple terms why it wasn't possible. I have no problem with users having little IT knowledge, its my job to help them.
