Airport Security Question (UK)

The problem will arise when you walk through the customs "Nothing to declare" line, get "randomly" checked and get fined for not declaring the items.

I've never seen someone there actually checking people. Do they do it at all times?

So how is admitting attempted tax evasion getting such an easy time on here? Lying to HMRC in another fashion and the outcome of the thread would be very different.

I'm sure many people would like to buy items VAT free and then sell them in the UK for cost +20%.

Yeah its not GD if, when someone asks a question, a few people don't jump on their soapboxes and get all moral and ****

Are you buying it from somebody a bit dim or something? :p

Why sell it to you at less than they can make elsewhere?

Because I asked them to buy it at that point in time, ready for me to buy it when I come over (at the same price).

So you've never bought a laptop, iPod, clothing or anything over £300 in another country and brought it back to the UK without saying anything?

Yeah that's what I was thinking, although in my many times of flying, I've never seen it happen. It will probably happen to me though, I just know it...

the only time you might get checked is when you walk through customs on the way out

if you go through "nothing to declare" and they do stop you , which is highly unlikely, either

a) they make you pay the VAT
b) they fine you
c) they take the goods from you
d) a combination of a,b,c

Not at all times but when I have seen them check people they have targeted them. There's nothing random about the random checks :p

Every time I get off the first morning arrival from IAD into LHR T1, there's never anyone there. They're all in T3 and T4 checking the passengers arriving from Africa and the East.

Nope. Then I'd be a hypocrite when I criticise tax evaders and benefit cheats.

Next?

This is a case of buying silver bullions with the intention of making money. I'm sure ocuk would love to do what you are doing. But it's illegal.

So its less common on internal EU flights then?

Or does it help if you dont look 'dodgy' :p

Defrauding HMRC is fun

ive never seen anyone being stopped in many many international flights

I've never been stopped in England, but on my last trip I was just about to leave the airport (on arrival) and a security guard stopped me and made me empty my suitcase onto the floor of the airport right in front of tons of people, and then barely even looked at it and just walked away. :/

If you're flying with somebody else, then surely you can split the silver amongst your luggage and theirs? Then it's below the threshold?

Possibly. I am going with three other people.

Might just get rid of it whilst I'm over there, would save me the hassle. Would make a bit on it regardless.

threshold is £300

thats only one 10oz silver bar each,

The intention to sell them is obvious though. :p

My cousin is the head of security of a international airport in North America, I know that they check hand luggage there so they will see the silver bars, whether they will alert the UK for them, I don't know? Is it suspicious enough for them to do that? Could they be stolen?

It's difficult to say really unless you're deep on the inside and if you are, you probably wouldn't give out those secrets.

when my friend went through, they saw and inspected the silver bars at securty on the way out of the USA and didnt say anything

just let him through, they didnt alert anyone

as for being stolen, you would have the purchase receipt where you bought them to prove they werent stolen

I have had my case scanned on arrival back in the UK and they said they were looking for watches and gold amongst other stuff

Nope, it was literally immediatelly before the exit door. Like 4 feet away.

Weird thing is he didn't even inspect the contents. Just got me to empty it all and then decided he had something more important to do and walked off.

(He was carrying an assault rifle, so I wasn't going to argue though).
