The problem will arise when you walk through the customs "Nothing to declare" line, get "randomly" checked and get fined for not declaring the items.
I've never seen someone there actually checking people. Do they do it at all times?

So how is admitting attempted tax evasion getting such an easy time on here? Lying to HMRC in another fashion and the outcome of the thread would be very different.
I'm sure many people would like to buy items VAT free and then sell them in the UK for cost +20%.

Why sell it to you at less than they can make elsewhere?

So you've never bought a laptop, iPod, clothing or anything over £300 in another country and brought it back to the UK without saying anything?
Not at all times but when I have seen them check people they have targeted them. There's nothing random about the random checks
Every time I get off the first morning arrival from IAD into LHR T1, there's never anyone there. They're all in T3 and T4 checking the passengers arriving from Africa and the East.

If you're flying with somebody else, then surely you can split the silver amongst your luggage and theirs? Then it's below the threshold?
ive never seen anyone being stopped in many many international flights

threshold is £300
thats only one 10oz silver bar each,
I've never been stopped in England, but on my last trip I was just about to leave the airport (on arrival) and a security guard stopped me and made me empty my suitcase onto the floor of the airport right in front of tons of people, and then barely even looked at it and just walked away. :/
My cousin is the head of security of a international airport in North America, I know that they check hand luggage there so they will see the silver bars, whether they will alert the UK for them, I don't know? Is it suspicious enough for them to do that? Could they be stolen?
It's difficult to say really unless you're deep on the inside and if you are, you probably wouldn't give out those secrets.
ouch, was this in customs ?
Nope, it was literally immediatelly before the exit door. Like 4 feet away.
Weird thing is he didn't even inspect the contents. Just got me to empty it all and then decided he had something more important to do and walked off.
(He was carrying an assault rifle, so I wasn't going to argue though).
