Is PSN under attack? - PSN now back up 15/05

really wouldnt expect this from a company like sony...

Every big name out there has been compromised in some form. Some just don't publicly admit it/the media don't pick it up. Like people have already said, where there's a will there's a way.

This may possible be somewhat interesting to some I guess? Apparently a 14 year old? :S Obviously none of this is confirmed etc, but some people are checking it up and some of it does seem legit, but obviously this is the internet and it could be all fiction.

I think the article was saying that a 14 year old script kiddy could pull that off, not that the actual attacker was 14. Loving the IP address in those log files though :D

WOW this isn't what I expected the statement was going to be. They should have released this statement ages ago.

Any idea on when the network is back up so we can change our details?

What's the rush?

No, it's a forum, I have an opinion and was airing it.

Its the "Greedy Sony" bit that made you look very silly. Greedy Sony? Removing OtherOS had nothing to do with greed, Getting hacked had nothing to do with Greed. I'm quite confused in all honesty as to what Greed has to do with ANYTHING ATALL with regards to this situation. Greed isnt a factor anywhere.

The only people at fault here are the hackers. Only mistake Sony made was telling us late about the data problem

Wasn't that the reason give for the PS3 being hacked and for becoming a target?

Don't think that the PS3 hacking has anything to do with this, why would someone steal users credit card details if they annoyed at Sony, there are far worse things they can do.

The latest development in the PlayStation Network downtime situation has drawn the attention of a United States Senator. Among those upset with Sony over its handling of the ongoing PSN fiasco -- which the company just announced today may have resulted in an unauthorized individual gaining access to users' personal data -- is Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal. In the wake of today's news, the former Connecticut Attorney General has written a letter to Sony Computer Entertainment America president Jack Tretton demanding the PlayStation maker do more for its customers.

"I am writing regarding a recent data breach of Sony's PlayStation Network service," the letter opens. "I am troubled by the failure of Sony to immediately notify affected customers of the breach and to extend adequate financial data security protections." The Senator wants Sony to do more than simply suggest customers get a free credit report and place a fraud alert on their files. "When a data breach occurs, it is essential that customers be immediately notified about whether and to what extent their personal and financial information has been compromised," Blumenthal continues. "Additionally, PlayStation Network users should be provided with financial data security services, including free access to credit reporting services, for two years, the costs of which should be borne by Sony. Affected individuals should also be provided with sufficient insurance to protect them from the possible financial consequences of identity theft."

oh i didnt mean the fact they just got attacked but more how succesful the attack was and the massive (in relative terms) disruption to the service and still no real end in sight, to when it will be all back up and running.
:)

OK I admit it the "stupid greedy Sony" was an over the top reaction to just finding out this news (a bit like when you slip with a wrench and bash your knuckles!!!)

I've bought quite a few things off PSN and recently to. My wife also regularly buys Singstar tracks so we both have Credit Cards registered with PSN :(

i told people to expect huge delays earlier and they all jumped down my throat, stuff like this takes ages, i used the GT5 analogy earlier, i fully expect this to take several weeks. they said it is being re-built, if its being done from scratch it could take months, if they are simply re-building what is there and making extra re-enforcements then weeks.

if it does take months, i honestly dont know what im going to do, if your thinking of selling your ps3 do it now, the money your going to get is going to bomb over the coming weeks. in a months time you will probably be able to pick up a pre-owned ps3 for next to nothing and some stores may even refuse to buy them, if they get too many.

And I thought they guy who cancelled his credit card was being a bit drastic :D

Seriously though, I would assume another 2 weeks max. At the end of the day it is just a technical problem (redesigning or safeguarding the PSN). Any technical problem can be fixed if you throw enough money and/or resources at it. I would assume that 3 weeks of downtime/lost revenue would cost them much more than to pay over the odds to get people to redesign/fix the network. Month or months is pushing it to be honest.

Last week in anticipation of having a long holiday from work I bought Black Ops so I can play with my work mates, Portal 2 because I can activate it on steam and use it on my PC and MacBook. I also bought Fifa 11 For my Son but I can't play any of them, Could be that by the time PSN comes back Portal 2 will be an old bargain bin game and I'll be last to the party :(
