Is PSN under attack? - PSN now back up 15/05

Having seen a few more of you just cancelling I really think it's a good idea. Like I mentioned before I had money taken from a brand new card that had never been used anywhere. They actually took cash out of a machine so how on earth did they manage to clone what was a brand new card and also know my pin?? Luckily the bank spotted the withdrawals were made in HongKong, therefore suspicious so blocked my card.

I had to still fill in a form and wait to get my money back. I think for the sake of just having to draw some cash out and wait a few days for a new card, cancelling your card seems to be well worth it.

Following the crowd "just because" is seldom a good idea. If it's not going to inconvenience you then there's really no harm in it, but personally I can do without the trouble unless it's genuinely quite likely that hackers have got their hands on enough useful information to actually enable fraudulent transactions.

That, of course, is something only Sony can confirm.

There was an interesting point raised by a journalist on LBC this morning. When PSN is brought back up, how will Sony be able to tell that the genuine user is logging in and not a hacker using the login details that have been stolen?

Not every one can do that thou for example im minus and into my over drat im not in a position to cancel the card and wait cause ill have no cash in between waiting. Whilst i get that your all doing it to be safe its still not a guarantee your card wont be done.

There were 77 million records supposedly. You've got more chance of winning the lottery than someone picking your card details out. :D

can someone please answer me this:)

for people that did not have card details stored at the time of the attacks , before or after , will they still be at risk of any potential card fraud?

thanks

Cards can be terminated for new ones, money lost through identity theft can be recovered.

My cards details will have been on PSN, I'm not worried, but I'm annoyed such a big companies security was so shockingly bad.

That's my only "issue" really. Not that it's been compromised but that a company like Sony could have this happen.

Peoples minds are changing now "I'm not paying to play online with Xbox 360 when its free on the PS3" With this credit card issue arising just shows you pay for quality and security when paying for Xbox Live.

Let's not turn this to a console vs console.

Is Xbox Live actually any more secure though? I doubt any of us know this, nor are ever likely to.

They are not a target though. Haha, maybe some Sony fanboy hackers are now going to be trying.

Such a farce :D

I'm glad I never had my details stored and always used pre-paid cards.

Q) Can you log onto the PSN website and change your details or is all that offline as well?

Wouldn't mind just changing my password.

I agree with what your saying, I'm only fearful as I have been in the situation before. It's not nice seeing transactions on your account that you know nothing about and then having the hassle of claiming back your money.

It's a difficult one though as I was saying a lot of us probably shop at various places online. Who's to say how safe our data is. I tend to always be wary of where I shop even down to removing stored card details from sites. But when data can be taken so easily from such a large organisation like Sony it puts things in to perspective. I wish all places online would give you the option to store or NOT store the details as I would probably prefer to enter them manually each time.

Managed to find some receipts for Playstation Network transactions on my old backup emails (glad I keep backups now!) which showed me the last 4 digits of the card(s) I used, which are now cancelled. Had to call Bank and CC company and both seem to know what's going on, just had to mention "PSN" and both my cards were immediately cancelled.

Ive found that its not only sony that include the last 4 digits of your card in that manner.

Nope. You get a message saying it's down or well "under maintenance"

At least they could have changed the error message :D

What a mess, cancelled my credit card just in case, the guy said he's had loads of similar calls this morning.

i just want to make sure as ive used my card on psn before but always remove it after , although i dont store it i just was not sure if sony kept any card details there end?

As far as I am aware, a retailer taking card payments has to keep the records for X number of years.

Ultimately it will depend on whether Sony think they may have got at stored payment details within a user account (more likely) or any transaction history records Sony have (unlikely).

I'd say you were probably safe as from the sounds of it, they've probably just been able to access the accounts database and whatever was stored in it at the time.

No one here can really give you a definitive answer though, the only people who know are Sony. If you're genuinely worried, it may be better for your peace of mind to just get the card changed - it's a call you have to make yourself really.

it would have been better if you all took your cards to the nearest cash machine (without cctv) and cleared it out, then phoned up your bank 2 days later

trollface

problem?????
