Is PSN under attack? - PSN now back up 15/05

Because people will blow it way way way out of proportion? I'm not saying this PSN fiasco isn't bad but it's still going to be blown up.

I think you are blowing it out of proportion. Is it bad? Yes. Is it going to ruin the company? Of course not.

What's the worse that happens? No one puts their credit card details on their store again and pays via PSN cards (Which are cheaper). Not the end of the world.

Yes some people will go over to Xbox and a lot of Xbox players will be slagging off PS3 for many years to come but I doubt it will go much further than that.

They are rebuilding their security systems to make themselves better protected. I won't have any issues with storing my details on their system in the future.

I am confident that the PSN will be as strong as ever in a years time.

As had been said, if Xbox can recover from RROD and Live being down for two weeks then Sony will recover from this. Giving out some freebies would be the best way to do it - a £5 voucher for PSN maybe. :D I'd buy MGS!

Live was never down for 2 weeks, seems this is just a myth created by Sony fans to make them feel better. Yes Live had performance issues that caused some problems but it was never down and unable to be used for 2 weeks.

You could still login and play online the main problems were with party's.

Personally I don't care if it down for a week or two. I can still play my playstation and watch Blurays on it and iplayer.

I would never switch to Xbox as it doesn't offer the same functions that I want from a console.

Although I do like that thing you call online gaming....but surely that is just witchcraft :D

Still rather weird that Kazuo Hirai has not made any kind of statement. He's supposed to be the CEO of SCE. Maybe he won't get Howard Stringer's job now after this. :p

The PSN issue continues to trundle along, picking up rumours and creating doubts and fears along the way. Sony look set to finally address those fears and hopefully give their customers some more concrete indication of the network’s schedule of return with a press conference tomorrow.

Kazuo Hirai is to talk to the world’s press at the conference in Japan tomorrow at 2PM, local time (that’s 5AM in the UK or midnight, EST). It is obviously unknown what Kaz will say but we’d expect some further (or at least more detailed) information about exactly what was compromised, how it was stored and a more detailed road map for switching on what we hope will be a new and improved service.

The PSN hack and subsequent downtime has made international news, doubtless damaging Sony’s reputation as well as its stock price. Hopefully this press conference is the first step towards regaining consumer trust and keeping a more regular and informative communication with their consumers.

From sixthaxis, so will be interesting indeed!

Npz, I think their doing it on Sunday cause they might have now realised their taking week to give us any information is one of reasons people are so annoyed so they dont want to delay it any further

I hope the Information Commisioners Office nail Sony to the wall for a loss of data of this magnitude. I for one am annoyed that my personal data has been lost and I'm one of those who DOESN'T have my credit card data held with Sony.

I don't see how they are going to nail them to the wall. They would have had to have met a certain standard of security anyway for legal reasons. They were hacked, they didn't give out the details willingly. I'm not saying they couldn't have done something better about it or how they handled the situation but I don't see them getting into trouble

Play.com had a similar thing happen the other month to them. Did they get in trouble? Nope. Will PSN get in trouble. Nope.

I think there is more rage that we can't get back on rather than whether the security has been flawed.

Haven't been a PS3 owner for some time now, and closed my account when I sold it (and have changed address and bank card since), but just got this through (not sure if already posted):

Valued PlayStation Network/Qriocity Customer:

We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this intrusion, we have:

1) Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services;

2) Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation into what happened; and

3) Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our network infrastructure by re-building our system to provide you with greater protection of your personal information.

We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and efficiently as practicable.

Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state/province, zip or postal code), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence that credit card data was taken at this time, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, to be on the safe side we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained.

For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security, tax identification or similar number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them, as well.

To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant to review your account statements and to monitor your credit or similar types of reports.

We thank you for your patience as we complete our investigation of this incident, and we regret any inconvenience. Our teams are working around the clock on this, and services will be restored as soon as possible. Sony takes information protection very seriously and will continue to work to ensure that additional measures are taken to protect personally identifiable information. Providing quality and secure entertainment services to our customers is our utmost priority. Please contact us at www.eu.playstation.com/psnoutage should you have any additional questions.

Sincerely,
Sony Network Entertainment and Sony Computer Entertainment Teams

Just rang barclays they told me there was no need to cancel card they are not been informed they had actually been taken and anything untoward would be refunded no problem

Which is strange since when I called up barclays debit card services on Wednesday they cancelled my card then and there even though I mentioned the PSN hack.

I hope the Information Commisioners Office nail Sony to the wall for a loss of data of this magnitude. I for one am annoyed that my personal data has been lost and I'm one of those who DOESN'T have my credit card data held with Sony.

Sorry but if the PSN servers are not in the UK then the ICO can't do a single thing about it.

It will be interesting to see if they get it up when they said they will.

When thinking about it I'm actually not that bothered about it being down. I'm a single player kinda person anyway. I just like seeing what my friends/family are up to on the PS3 :p
