thanks to everyone else, the weird thing is I still don't feel slim (44" down to a 32" waist!) but when people who I've not seen for a long time realise it's me it's a massively awesome feeling.

I limited what I ate to 3 meals a day (and portion control), cut right down on the takeaways (maybe one a month instead of 2-3 a week), taking a packed lunch instead of my debit card and buying lunch whilst at work and I took up walking to work (3.5 miles a day). having a new, active job helped massively.
Obviously everything was in moderation, I lost a reasonable amount of weight over a long period of time, I didn't starve, but I did learn all about hunger .
I think the most important thing I did was not to punish myself, I wanted to do it and I wanted to succeed, sometimes you feel like giving in, when that happened I would have a smaller 'treat', a standard packet of crisps instead of a share sized bag or a chocolate bar instead of a bar of chocolate (absolutely never bought a multipack of anything unhealthy, an open pack is an empty one!), it's much easier to get back on the wagon when you aren't imagining you've wrecked all of your previous work.
