I've been long overdue for an upgrade on my current machine, but the only things I want to upgrade are:

  • Motherboard
  • RAM

Here are my current specifications:

My Current Specifications

Motherboard: Gigabyte 965P-DS3P | Chipset P965/G965
RAM: 3072MBytes of Corsair Ballistix DDR2 | Clocks : 5/5/5/18 | Dual Channel
CPU: Inter Core 2 Quad Q8400 | Socket 775 LGA
Sound Card: Creative Xfi Extreme Music
Graphic Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 | 1024MB | Clocks Core = 750MHz, Shaders = 1890MHz, Memory = 1150MHz
Powersupply: 1000w, can't remember the make, but its dynamic (Can switch out cables etc)

My budget for this is around £200, any advice is greatly appreciated! :D

I exprience a lot of "Hang time" when playing certain games, i'm pretty sure it's not my graphics, but when I inspect my memory usage it's usually nearly maxed out, So i feel I need a bit more RAM for my current system, If I dont need a Motherboard upgrade, Could you suggest a decent set of RAM?

Especially as I have the ability to upgrade myself to a 64bit system, but with only 3GB of RAM i don't really see much point to it at the moment.

I have 3 1GB sticks of RAM taking up 3 spots, as far as I've been told, my current motherboard can only handle DDR2, but when it comes to RAM i do get a bit confused now and then.

And yes, i'm on a 32 bit system but i can upgrade to 64bit.

I was only pointing out the ridiculous cost of the 4GB DDR2 kit against a DDR3 kit to try to convince you to keep your money in your pocket.

You will need a DDR2 kit.

32bit OS can only use upto around 3.4GB of ram anyway, so adding more wont have any effect until you go 64bit.

I know that, and as i stated, multiple times, I can upgrade to a 64bit OS at any time, what I'm asking is what RAM is a better upgrade to what I have? I've had this system for several years now, and I feel it's long overdue for an upgrade.

Dont upgrade the RAM.

Did you know that a GTS250 is just a re-named 9800GT? so very slow these days.

I use a 9800gt as a PhysX card, thats all its good for.

I'm in the UK, but they do ship internationally.

I think i'll go for that RAM, it would cost me Under £100 to get it and it's twice as fast as the RAM i currently have.

Vesper,

If you're intent on spending £100 you should get this:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-259-SP

It will do far more for your game playing than tinkering with your RAM.

I just compared the specs of that with my current card, and my current card has a higher core speed and the same type of graphics RAM, so I dont see how upgrading something that I know I don't need to upgrade would help with my memory issues.

I feel i need to upgrade my RAM because my memory gets maxed out constantly, and i'm pretty sure the memory being maxed out isn't something to do with my graphic card.

Also, I don't trust ATI, had too many issues with them in the past to trust them.

-_- You seem to be ignoring the questions I'm asking here.

I'm fully aware that it's DDR2, I can clearly tell with the title containing "DDR2" in it.

What i'm asking is:

CAN MY MOTHERBOARD HANDLE DDR3? YES/NO
