But in all seriousness do you like covers?

I like a few covers but generally speaking too many cover versions add nothing when compared to the original and look like nothing more than a cheap cash-in. Something like 30 Seconds To Mars covering Stronger is an example of what I'd call a good cover - it does it differently and makes it their own. Something like The Foo Fighters covering Baker Street - it's very well done, as you might expect but it's not distinctive enough to make me think it was worth doing. And then there's abominations such as Jedward covering Teenage Kicks - what made them think they could ever do justice to such a song is beyond me, there's a special circle of Hell reserved for that sort of thing.

I like Anti-Heroes cover of "Rock & Roll ******" by Patti Smith. Also, Hatebreed have an entire album of covers (For The Lions). And there's the fantastic Me First & The Gimme Gimmes.

I like punk covers.

Jimi H - All Along the Watch Tower

Also, would really urge people to listen to Atlantic City - Rock Hold Steady. I adore that cover.

Dropkick Murphy's version / cover of The Green Fields of France is really top notch.

Isreal's cover of Somewhere Over the Rainbow is also, one of the just nicest voices I've ever heard and such a beautifully sang song. Often played at the end of get togethers with me and my friends in the summer (After a BBQ / Food / Drink) and everyone just sits and sings along. Lovely stuff.

The Dropkicks cover of Green Fields of France is as bad as the Skrewdriver cover. Absolutely awful and possibly the worst example of the song. Although I'm biased as I absolutely hate the Dropkicks and Skrewdriver.

The Fureys pretty much owned Green Fields of France. Like a lot of the covers they did.

Hurt, Johnny Cash is an all-time fave.

I'd also add that anyone who hasn't heard it yet should try and watch the video version. The song is great by itself but I think the story behind the video makes it all the more poignant and powerful.

The Loved Ones - Johnny 99
Lou Barlow - Round and Round
Hellsongs - all of their records, tbh
Social Distortion - Death or Glory....

Loads more.

Have to agree there's some amazing cover bands out there.

Gives me another excuse to post the video of these guys:

Off to see them soon too :)
