Hey all,

Was looking to buy 3 prints from Deviant Art as they are currently having 20% off all Photo prints, the total is £122 including £6 postage.

Was just wondering what is likely to happen regarding customs and VAT charges, never been sure how they apply to 'art'

Any help or feedback from previous experiences would be welcome.

Also all 3 pieces are from the same artist, is it worth messaging them directly to see if they would sort something out as they are from Italy, not sure if that would incur less in the way of charges?

Thanks all!

Customs charges apply to everything coming into the country from outside the EU with a value of over £18. Duty only applies to certain things such as alcohol; I'm pretty sure art isn't part of it.

If they were to print in Italy and send to you then you shouldn't pay as they are part of the EU, although I usually find if you ask the person they'll normally use a printing company within the UK if they are outside.

Art is subject to reduced VAT of 5% anyway, though in this scenario the photographs likely wouldn't meet the criteria to be class as art...

How would you normally pay for them to print it if they are still the ones uploading it? I'll ask her if she has a preferred method, but there are a few places I like to use in London but you have to pay online when you upload the prints..

Just an update, ordered via DeviantArt as the artist insisted, but worked out well that they didn't incur any fee's and the print quality is good.

Hi,

Are you saying you didn't incur any fee's because you weren't charged any when you bought them?

Because i bought a camera bag from DeviantART and it came didn't have any fee's on the invoice or anything but then got a letter from Fedex saying i need to buy them the fee's as they had to pay them when the received my order (and to be really nice they added their own fee on top :-( )

Might want to look out for a letter.

J

:\ How long after you got the order did you get the letter?

Surely they can't do that after you have received the package? Whenever I've been charged for customs it's been paid on collection from the depot/sorting office...

Can't remember but my order from DeviantART was delivered on the 1st Dec 2010 & i payed the Fedex fee on the 20th Dec so might on been 2-3 weeks after delivery.

It's worth saying the DeviantART order came to £56 and the TAX fee total was £13, £10 of which was Fedex's admin charge.

You might be ok, but want to let you know to look out for a letter.
