UEFA Champions League Final - Manchester United vs. Barcelona

Same here, it seems to be getting worse as well. I'm not naive, everyone does it to a greater or lesser extent, but for a team as lauded as Barca that when the going gets tough rather than trying to play through their problems they cheat to give themself an advantage. It just sticks in the throat a little.

The thing that really gets to me is that if theres one team on this earth that doesn't need to cheat, its Barca. I lost so much respect for them in the first leg against RM. Hell, they made Nani and Ronnie seem tame. Messi is not like this. In the second leg he could have went down in the box and probably won the pen but instead tried to score. Thats how football should be.

Really hope they don't pull that crap in the final... Can't see Rooney keeping his cool for the entire game.

As a Leeds fan it pains me to say it but I hope Man U destroy Barca by several goals.

The thing we have over Barca is a better squad. Barca are getting tired, they showed this when the lost on the weekend. The big problem Barca have is the fact they play their best players week in and week out while Utd have the luxary of resting players for bigger games.

Hope this stays true come the final.

Ronaldo's actually been pretty damn "good" his whole time in Spain and was getting better at the end of his Utd career aswell, Nani isn't great, for me its less how often he goes down, but how irritating his reaction is while he's down.

Barca have been bad for a while, and Messi doesn't go down often at all, though the chance he had to go down was outside the penalty area, another ridiculous, reckless and late tackle by Alonso. Hell Mascherano does less reckless cynical tackles than Alonso since they went to Spain.

Thing is Messi did go down easy a couple times, but I can understand it, he's a player who drives past players and very close to them, taking a knock at high speed can cause all mannor of nasty falls and legs tangling up which can cause nasty knee/ankle twists. For me Messi, when he goes down a little too easily is in the catagory of preventing injury/assuming he was going to be fouled, rather than flat out diving. For instance the Mascherano/Busquets/Alves dives were pathetic, they faked contact and pretended they'd been murdered. Messi isn't like that AT ALL, and good on him.

As you said one of the single most frustrating and inconceivable things is of any team in the world they have the least reason to cheat.

Its why I HATE Gerrard, its the way he cheats, he doesn't feel minor contact and pretend to be shot, he runs into people on purpose then pretends to have been shot. I can understand going down easily when you're Wigan and scared of relegation or the equivilant team in La Liga, but Barca, Utd, Inter doing it is flat out embarassing.

Won't matter, Barca will wrap the league up on Wednesday and they can rest who they like till the final.

I forgot the daft head to head thing. Yep, it's over then. A draw on the weekend will make it certain.

Really wish if two teams drew at the end of the season they would have a final to settle it. Goal difference and head to head rules just leaves it at an anti-climatic end. I mean, how often do two teams end on the same points at the top?

Head to head rules are a daft idea, but having a final is an even worse idea. A league should be about consistent results over 38 games, head to head reduces it to two games and a final reduces it to one. Anything can happen in one game! What I like about the Premier League format is that 3 points counts for 3 points whoever it comes against, as do goals scored and conceded. Teams should be rewarded for consistency.

hmm good point but thats what makes the play offs in the championship so exciting. Feels like a proper end to a season... when teams go head to head.

Im thinking th only way we can win is to deploy cropper scholes in a sacraficial role and see how many 'scholes' challenges he can get away with on messi hopefully taking him out before getting red carded. Barca are a great team but attacking wise are not that strong without Messi.

He'd end up getting sent off without damaging Messi, making it even more difficult, I can't see Scholes starting.

My prediction:

van der Sar

O'shea Ferdinand Vidic Evra

Valencia Carrick Fletcher Giggs Park

Rooney

Of course Fergie could just look to do a containing job for 60 minutes and then bring on Hernandez....

Bingo - :)
After 2009 Fletcher is bound to start imo, while I agree he will be short of match fitness, I think Utd need his style of high energy game (with Park) vs Barca to stand any kind of chance

+1, ill think he will do that too, and if we are still in the game he will bring on hernandez for park and shift fletcher out wide.

Really not sure that's the answer though, what happens if while we're doing this containing job we go 1/2-0 down - mountain to climb then even with Hernandez on the bench

Personally I think the best way to start is on the front foot, that's how we almost took the lead in Rome and at the Nou Camp the year before, that means starting with Chicharito and giving them a problem from the off. Besides which if we are negative from the off then should Hernandez come on with an hour gone then their defenders are hardly going to be tired are they because chances are we wont have put them under any pressure

Where's atpbx when you need him, he'd know what we should do ;)

I'm really torn here. I always want english teams do well in Europe (yes, even 'pool :/ ) but I also really like Barca.

Either way I'm predicting a pretty tight game with Man U perhaps just shading it if Fergie gets his tactics right.

I hope he uses all of the forwards during the game whether we're in-front or behind, Berbatov is great at holding the ball, Rooney is good running down and flushing out and Valencia always plays well off Rooney, its the other midfield I'm worried about. Carrick/Fletcher I guess but they need clear instructions on who they're tracking and not to get flustered on the ball, i.e. Carrick making a silly pass.

Chico is brilliant but he's perfect for when there is 15mins to go, they all know he is a poacher and tries to beat the trap but it depends on service too if Carrick/Fletcher are holding back in-front of Rio/Vidic.

Hell, even Owen could make an impact too but he probably won't be used. Rafael is a worry also if he loses his temper, especially as Barca players like to barrel roll at least 8 times when touched.
