Goodbye Spotify

There are no adverts on the paid for accounts.

Besides, how does a few adverts stop the music being free. You don't have to pay to listen to adverts.

Naturally there are no adverts for the paid accounts but the paid accounts wouldn't come under the bracket of free anyway.

I would say you have free access to music (although limited to an online and traditional computer) rather than use the term 'free music', which is a bit misleading. You're right in that you don't have to pay for advertisements but it's clear that until now, that's where Spotify has been generating its revenues from in regards to non-paying users.

The nature of the advertisements on Spotify (i.e. between songs) doesn't cause monetary concern to the free user but it doesn't feel like a 'free experience', at least not personally, as a website supported by non-intrusive (and thus easily ignored) ads would do.

My limit ran out, I bought unlimited. Can't begrudge it. Service and client is fantastic. I use it every day!

I had the full package until I got frustrated with the fact that they had none of the new music I liked. Instead they had awful cover band versions.

I've now cancelled my sub and was using the free version and now I'm stopping using it altogether.

I prefer owning it to be honest. On a side note: I know of a guy who was at Myspace, was let go, and started at Spotify. I wonder how long Spotify's workforce will remain intact? (Or will it grow..?)

i also prefer owning. there have been times in my life where i've had to get rid of my computer and internet when in the **** money wise. i'd cry if i had no music. :D

i also like to think that by buying CDs, more money goes the artists i like. :)

as i mentioned in another spotify thread recently, these changes don't affect the way i use it. i only use it to preview new albums by artists i haven't heard before. it saves me being a naughty boy as i always try before i buy. it's very rare there's something i'm interested in that isn't on there.

I've been a subscriber since I joined a couple of years ago.

Admittedly it's annoying when songs aren't there, but overall I prefer it to having to torrent albums. I'm glad the phase of everyone bragging at the size of their mp3 collection is over.

  • Cost
  • Convenience
  • What advantages to you gain by owning?

You're generalising based on *your* needs. Just to smash your comments based on *my* needs:

1) Spotify would be more expensive for me. I generally only now buy albums from bands I already know. So there's only a few a year.

2) Depends on your definition of "convenient". Convenient for me is being able to play my music on any device (intended to play digital music) that *I* want. Spotify only lets you play music on devices *they* want. See naff Linux support as an example.

There will be many use cases for going subscription, and many use cases against.

As an aside I'm someone who hates not paying for things outright where possible. Getting a SIM free phone + 30 day SIM Only contract instead of a contract + phone for which you pay the phone off over 24 months etc. So I try to limit them. But that's just me.

I just miss sky songs :( far better than spotify especially since the change of payment. At least on sky songs as well un limited streaming, you got to keep 10 songs a move drm free. Only if there was a similar service and it was only 6.40. 1.40 more thanspotify and you cpget to keep songs.

I use Spotify for listening to songs that I've not heard before, or to search for similar artists. I usually go to Play.com and have a look at what's been newly released, then head on to Spotify for a quick listen. :)

I never hit the time allowance, but I don't like the fact that it limits you to 5 listens of a song. (Think that's what I read)

I probably would pay for it, but I'm not a heavy user and to be honest, I can most likely just go to YouTube and listen to the songs on there before deciding to purchase any CD's, etc.

The thing is as well isnt this only usefull if you know the music you want to listen to?

I mean you can go to websites where users have set up playlists you can download. But you cant just tell it to play random rock music, or artists from 1988.

Just ran out on my 10hours of music. Spotify has become an utter joke.
Anyone else uninstalled it?

Stop throwing your toys out of the pram because you can't get something for nothing and consider paying £5 for access to a vast range of music!

I still buy physical albums from bands I particularly like. But for discovering new music and listening to pretty much anything you want on a whim, Spotify's more than worth the cost. It's cheaper than buying one album a month!

Personally I cant see why people are moaning. Before the digital age you had to pay for music, when did that change? (Discounting ilegal stuff)

Spotify £4.99 a month for all you can eat music which is a bargain. I use my spotify account everyday and get my monies worth. The music industry at the moment have their nickers in a twist and want to try and control a outdated and ageing system.

I've had spotify premium for over a year now, mainly so i can use it on my phone when out and about and have no grudges. I wouldn't pay if i couldn't use offline playlists but compared to the amount of albums I used to buy and the convenience i get i have no qualms paying.

Pandora was better than Spotify for discovering new music. Spotify is better than Pandora at giving me what I want to listen now - assuming I have it or it has it...

I miss pandora. Must be about 3-4 years ago since they stopped streaming to the UK. I use spotify on my phone, work and home PCs... I want to get a couple of Sonos S5 for listening to it around the house, but there are stupidly annoying and long dropouts when using Spotify via Sonos... apparently - can anyone else confirm this.
