Hello OcUK Motors!
Some may remember my spec me a big car thread, I was recommended a Mondeo.

I went to Cargiant and tried out a Mondeo (59 plate if that helps define the shape) and an avensis (08). Both of these cars were slightly too small for me, however the space in the back after I've pushed the driver seat all the way back there was still decent for the rear passengers in the Mondeo.

I got a p/x value for my car (should have tried out a 5 series first) then left.

So I wanted to look at something a class up. I think the E60 will be big enough, but I'll only be able to tell once I've tried it, assuming it is big enough would this car be worth a look?

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif...e/bmw/postcode/rg1/radius/40/page/1?logcode=p

Is there anything that looks dodgy just from the ad? Thanks!

The Mk4 Mondeo is as big as the 5 Series.

The E60 is 4841x1846 mm
The Mondeo is 4778x2078 mm

So it's wider and barely any shorter.

And I wouldnt want a 7 year old £6k E60, especially not a crap spec one from round the back of some garages (Which is the sort of place you always find this sort of car now).

Leave them for the people who know no better and want bling at any cost.

In what way is a Mondeo slightly small for you? I've a 6'8 big barsteward friend who happily drove a mini while learning and had a focus for a few years after passage test!

I end up in the same seating position as in my astra mk4. I was 6'9" last time I checked, probably 6'10" now, and my right left rests against the door, on motorway journeys it stays in the position for long periods of time and gets sore :(

And I learnt in a Micra, it was too small, but I just wanted to pass, and did so just a month after my 17th birthday.

I'll only do around 5k miles (according to my Road Trip app) annually, so it can't be too bad?

Maybe I'm not thinking straight, but all my dads cars have been super reliable, he's done 110k (the vectra is now at 200k) in 4.5 years and the only major(ish) repair he's had was recently when the clutch friction plate split, and that was £340. I guess being around this sort of thing makes me think I won't face any repair bills especially in what I would imagine is a more reliable car (being BMW and all).

bmw seats are normally good for going so low, I am only 6'2ish and in just about every car i drive the seat has to be fully back and fully down so must be awful for you :(

I have spent £8500 running my 5 Series - which was half the age of that one when I bought it - over the last 4.5 years.

It isnt just repair bills, its everything that goes with a car like that - of which repair bills are a significant part.

Yeah it's quite bad.

And repair bills are the only unexpected costs though right. Stuff like tyres, servicing, MOT etc are all predictable and can be calculated ahead.

Edit: Didn't you sell your E39 through/to DM for 4.5k?

They can but seriously, at 17 years old are you really in the market for £500 sets of tyres, £350 servicing bills and whatnot?

Not to mention how much the insurance will cost on a 530i and of course all the hassle when you crash it.

Why not just buy a Focus 1.6 like everyone else for a few years?

No

I already have an Astra which I'm lead to believe has a bigger interior than a focus.

I was using this as an example, was planning on test driving a local one first, then getting insurance quotes on 530i and 520i.

And ok lol I thought I remembered DM saying he had 4.5k cash money in his hands having made one phone call or something.

I'd be surprised if you'd get an insurance quote under £10k for that at 17 years old. Get a crap, 1.0l car for £800, save up some money, wait a year or two until your insurance drops and then buy a lower mileage, fully serviced 5 series.

Probably should have put this in my first post, but I already have a 1.4 astra, and I don't work so I'm not paying for it.

Im 19 years old. With 1 years claim free driving on my dads car, i just got a quote off of a comparison site for £8983.56. £850 excess. and thats only doing 4000 miles a year.

Why on earth at 17 would you pay that much? Get a Mondeo. the car will be half the price. the insurance will be less than half the price!

I realise that, but whilst whoever is paying for it is probably fine about paying for insurance on a 1.4 astra, I'm fairly sure they won't be quite so accommodating when the quote from the insurers is 10x as much.
However much money you/your parents have, dropping £10k on a year's car insurance just seems mad to me - that extra £10k would get you a decent M5

So why are you asking advice here?

Sounds like, you don't work, so don't worry about paying for things like running costs & insurance etc

Perhaps the person who is paying should be asking these questions for you?

Jammy git! :p:D

I got quotes for 2k on a 520i.. I'm currently paying 2.1k for an Astra to the same company.

Wouldn't mind a 520i if the 530i quotes sky rocket, which they might as they won't give me a quote online for it.
