The Return of Fuel Protests

Organiser Ian Charlesworth said their aim was to get the government to reduce fuel tax duty by 24p a litre.

...that would be lovely but I think they're being a touch ambitious

Oh dear another futile protest wasting more of their precious fuel. I certainly won’t be rushing out to top up.

Ambitious yes, but perfectly fair.

There is no justifiable reason for high fuel taxes

If we don't pay it on fuel, we'll just end up paying it somewhere else, the government can't afford to just not have that much money.

Last time I looked our fuel prices and taxes were comparable with the rest of Europe? Also 24p? When they dropped the proposed 1p hike, they had to tax the north sea oil companies 2bn to plug the gap. Where would the gov find 48bn to allow such a drop?
People seem to think that the tax money is just for shts and giggles and its just put under a matress so could be cut out if wanted...

If the "protesters" are aiming to cause major disruption in order to get the government to change policy, why are they doing it on a SUNDAY. Or is it that they don't want to get held up on the way to work on Monday?

To cause maximum disruption just target a few strategic motorway junctions between 7 and 9 on any weekday morning..... ;)

They can afford it if they slash benefits spending

And it is not fair to make motorists pay, if you need the money put it on income tax

Oh right, we'll just cut all benefit money then, it's as simple as that, rypt has solved the countries money problems in one simple sentence.

Wake up and smell the coffee, the world doesn't work like the fantasy utopia in your head rypt

Yes, we should cut all benefits spending.

I personally favour the "law of the jungle" "survival of the fittest" approach, where people have to take personal responsibility and where no-one else owes them a living.

If you come on hard times then get family/friends to help you out, not rely on the rest of us to fund you.

(this is excluding people who are truly disabled with no family/friends)

You want to get the public on your side. Pssing them off on a Monday morning isn't smart.

I quite agree.

I don't think protests are the answer - we missed the boat on that one years back - I'm saying these guys are doing it wrong. :)

I honestly worry about how you will cope once you finish Uni.

Why should the rest of society be forced to help others (other than those who have medical conditions preventing them from working)?
