Mods

Oh, one more thing. When putting up pictures, can we use Facebook links or does that also count as hotlinking?

I'm not 100% on this but I'd think it was hotlinking as it's not a website you own - bit of an assumption there but I'm feeling pretty secure making it. Also quite a lot of people don't have Facebook so would they see your picture?

am i supposed to see a dustbin ?

It shows that a thread has had posts deleted in it, certainly soft deleted but I don't know if hard deleted posts also cause that icon to show up.

Can we have a little turd icon too that gets automatically added when certain members (eg: conspiracy nutters) start a new thread? :p

I thought the issue was with bandwidth stealing and that people can replace the hotlinked picture with something else - usually unsavoury.
I can't imagine Facebook having bandwidth issues, and I was meaning the direct image url you can get when right clicking an image so anyone can see it.
You could argue that Facebook is a kind of image rehosting site, the same as tinypic/imageshack etc. You don't own the bandwidth, but they don't mind you hosting pictures.

No it's an image hosting function, like image shack etc.

Don't you have to be logged in to view them though? Can be a bit annoying. They don't seem to show up in either.

Unless the people I've seen use fb have done it wrong.

Not if you use the direct url that ends in .jpg.
Go into your pictures, take off "&theater" from the URL and then right click the photo to get the direct .jpg link (or "copy image URL" if you're using Chrome) and then pop that between [img] tags. Easy peasy.
Good to know that we can use it, I've been rehosting some pictures on imageshack et al in the past as I was unsure of the rules.

Will do a test. Let's have a look at Lembit Opik changing a tire on the side of the motorway at 2am.

Here's the link to the gallery, which you shouldn't be able to access. I've set it so only I can see the picture. - [url]http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150241342436834&set=a.10150241342416834.367939.632036833&type=[/url]

And here's the direct .jpg link which you should be able to see.

Stupot_, I posted a Madeline McCann joke in the Bin Laden is dead thread which someone didn't like and RTMed it I guess. Mods took a similar view. Though, the post wasn't deleted which I thought was odd. I think worse things are said by some without receiving a ban. No idea who it was that banned me so couldn't email and ask.

Cheers for caring about me though. :D

Found it! Wow, banned for that... Bit heavy handed.

Don't see a problem with facebook. Someone want to link one to test out if you can see them when logged out?! You can find someones profile if you link a facebook pic though so not the best idea if you want to stay private.

OcUK is a more heavily moderated forum without a doubt.

My 2p worth is that some of the best laughs I have had online have been on unmoderated forums but there is usually choice language and inappropriate remarks not to mention a lack of more serious debate.

From my own point of view and that of others I hope, is that I am not unfair when it comes to moderating and if an e-mail is sent asking why I have closed a thread or edited a post etc, I will answer the person back with the reasons as to why.

When people suggest that mods are high and mighty and act with impunity, it is something that I can't agree with. That said, we are not perfect.

Huddy excepted.

Except the one who gave me a holiday last week for the most stupid of reasons

Obviously I'm still quite new the the moderating team so I'm still finding my way around. I think people really underestimate the work that goes in to moderating a huge forums like this. I hope that that i can practise fair and offer help when needed..

As for deleted posts, I have to admit in the past, not seeing deleted posts or not seeing any reason as to why can be an annoyance. However, when I have had posts removed (and i have), I assumed that a mod deemed it to be inappropriate and I left it that.

Not everyone will always agree with what moderators do and don't do. Common sense has to be applied on both sides of the virtual wall.

The most annoying thing, as has been said already, was the sense of confusion (and prospect of dementia looming) as you wondered whether you actually did hit submit, or whether you even posted at all.

In my opinion it's a real shame you have a few Dons/admin that don't have the mental capacity to handle the power & completely ruin the reputation of the Dons that obviously love the place & do there best to make things run smoothly.
There is 1 Don on here that openly posts he don't care & his actions support it whole heartedly, God knows how he is still a Don, In the past we have had Young kids as Admins that although appear quite intelligent just haven't the strength of character to separate there own emotions & feelings from the decisions they have to make as Dons. I have been on here for years now & have spent hours just watching the comings & goings & time & time again I have seen decent intelligent posters banned by immature mods who end up getting fed up within months & ******** off to play with there next toy.
Fortunately we have decent Dons that balance out the situation & work damn hard to keep the place what it is.

It's probably loads more than 6

And no loss really. Thousands of members can get on fine with the rules, and have a great time here - there are always a few that don't like to stick to the rules and feel they are "better" than them for some reason.

Mods don't get it right all the time, but I think more often than not we do. :)

It's a little concerning when I read posts similar to 4T5's, saying things along the lines of 'there's terrible mods here'/similar.

I agree with him that there is one, and we may or may not be thinking of the same person. I'm just not going to bother engaging with him. Luckily, I don't really find myself on the wrong side of the law on here so shouldn't have anything to worry about.

However, I am bemused as to why I got banned for my comment last week as I didn't think it was bad enough to warrant such a ban. Plus, there were comments of the same kind in that thread which seemed to go unpunished. But the Dons decision is fine and I respect that. Now I'll just be sure not to post anything about that again.

What is more worrying is I am not speaking from my own dealings with mods but from watching how they deal with other members.
All mods that have dealt with me know I just take my Suss & move on, Like I said before I know enough decent Mods to not let it bother me. What does bother me is when they influence new posters/customers, That really boils my **** as over the years we have lost some Superb contributors because of it.
