On my (Win XP) netbook, I've downloaded the latest Windows update (I dont even look at what they are nowadays tbh!) and immediately afterwards, the "Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - May 2011" apparently detected an infection and asked if I wanted to run a scan.

I clicked yes and its launched into a scan and in about an hour and a half its done 75% of the scan and found around 5500 infections!?!?!?

I cant believe I have this many spyware/malware items on my netbook - I only reinstalled it about 2 months ago and its not used a great deal!!!

My question is, is there any way to check if this is a cosher Windows utility or some dodgy virus/spyware itself??

I've never had it pop up before but to be fair it could have been the latest update for all I know!?!?

Anyone had a similar thing happen today?

Should look like that.

Thanks guys - nice to know its not some dodgy software!!!

Bit worried though that its still running after almost 2 hours and has found 6900 infected files!!!

Great!!!! Took 2 hours and then froze on the screen where it says its getting rid of the infection!?!?!

Downloaded Spybot to see if thats any better!

Get MBAM (use freeware version, don't really need the realtime protection). If it's running right now you'll need to kill it in safe mode or use Rkill.

I ran Spybot and it found a dozen or so problems and got rid of them! Would you say I still need to run this MBAM??

I really cant be bothered to do a full reinstall - I dont use the netbook too much! ;)

Yeah deffinatly run malwarebytes, its the best one about.

Its best to update it then go into safemode without netorking and ran the scan

BTW did you not get a restore DVD with your Netbook as I did !
Used a external usb dvd rom drive for the Netbook.

Does everyone see that scanning window when the malicious software tool is downloaded? I've had that tool in dozens of updates over the years and never seen that before

You have to run it by going start/run/ then typing mrt

You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect.

Sorry but imho do not do this!

1. Install Malwarebytes.
2. Update it.
3. Reboot to Safe Mode without networking.
4. Run a complete scan and remove anything found.

Safe Mode runs just enough to get Windows running so things like anti-virus and firewalls etc are not up and running so having networking enabled without them is risky imho.

What

Dont be silly unplug the lan cable when finished installing if you are that paronoid or wear a metal hat lol

Or safe mode

Why do people think that they will get a virus as soon as the connection is established

I have run MANY pc's withought a antivirus and NOT got a virus,
