Car parking at University going off co2

It's Loughborough University. I recognise that email.

At the moment, student parking outside the gates is horrendous and they're just avoiding the £75 per year current charge. When this comes in, who knows what will happen.

The University's response to complaints is 1) Buy a lower CO2 car (an incredibly simplistic view that ignores embodied energy); 2) Take public transport.

I work there. I'd like to see what my boss says when I arrive late to deliver a 9am lecture just because the bus didn't turn up. That kind of excuse is just about as credible as "the dog ate my homework."

On a more serious point: a lot of staff and students alike travel a long way to get to campus. Its location just off the M1 is a big selling point for many. If I can't (and won't) pay £300 a year, who knows what the students will do...

On the electric vehicles thing, these is one Electric Smart wondering around campus. However, Estates (who are implementing this scheme) have one of this G-Wizz things and several brand new electric mini-trucks.

Same here, you're not allowed a car if you're living in uni accomodation, which I think it's fair considering the shortage of parking spaces.

It's about 90 quid a year for any car.

I wonder if the faculty all have to pay, or is it just the Students?

My other half works for the NHS and she has to pay £9 week to par her car in the hospital car park.

I work in the private sector and I don't have to pay anything.

****ing morons...

That would have been a reason to avoid such a uni imho...

Perhaps they should charge FAT people more money too, because they breathe out more co2 when walking ?

Does a car with more emissions some how ware out a parking space faster, you've already paid more duty, probably used more fuel and paid the tax on that and to add insult to injury extra to park.

I find it very worrying how this CO2 stuff is being forced onto the general public - talk about telling people what they will and won't think, eh?

I guess Universities were simply the next logical step as they generally tend to have a severe outbreak of the lefties on campus. :o

Exactly.

Why does a university, who are only providing a single car parking space for a few hours a day, get to try and dictate what kind of car you should have? If it was me, i would be sending them a strongly worded email back telling them to shove it up there ****.

EDIT: Actually, i would still park on campus and just let them keep giving me tickets - i would then file them in the bin.

Should be riding a push bike at uni anyway, healthy body, healthy mind an all that :)

Everyone has to pay. I'm faculty and got exactly the same email as everyone else. If you're a Grade 1 or 2 staff (cleaners etc.) then the Unions insisted on a lower rate. But otherwise all staff have to pay the same.

Wow, that is bad idea. Guess they're just using any method to get more money in, after the years of trying to get everyone into Uni and then realising it has to be paid for.

From what I remember from having been to Loughborough Uni one thing it's not short of it parking spaces, but those times were mostly >6pm so maybe its busier during the day....

I'd like to know the CO2 output for my car for a giggle. It pre-dates VINs, so someone expecting to tax it based on it CO2 output might have a challenge :p

Academia is largely dominated and controlled by by left leaning, socialist 'progressives' so such a policy does not surprise me....

Count yourself lucky!

I'm at Uni of Surrey (like jonny69 mentioned) and there is ZERO parking for students! Only a rip off pay and display. Lots of parking for staff though untill we steal it to test our formula student vehicle!

Why should those on lower pay get a deduction? That is strange as well.

Guess it is just like the tax system with people who earn more pay more (assuming cleaners get less than the other staff).

That aside, always disliked the admin side of things at Loughborough when I was there. Least the parking was cheap for me :p
