hey guys,

im thinking og getting another gtx480 as i would like to try 3 monitors and for some extra performance in the graphics

now i have a antec true power 750w modular psu, will it be enough power for the gpus and the rest of the machine ??

i dont have anything overclocked so everything is at default speeds

my system spec

i5 760
msi p55 gd80
2x2gb xms3
asus gtx480
antec true power 750w modular psu
seagate barracuda 1tb hdd
coolermaster cm-690 ii lite
antec kuhler 620

thats all of it i think, but yeh could somebody help me as i dont want to buy another card and there not be enough power for it

cheers chaps beasty

Saw somewhere that a SLI gtx480 rig drew 712w from the wall. 750w is enough but I wouldn't make a habit of running furmark too much.

will my 750w psu be ok with two gtx480's ??

also will using three monitors put more stress onto both cards which then puts more stress on the psu ??

beasty

I couldn't reccomend it, I run GTX470 SLI on a 700watt PSU and Heaven Benchmark and Furmark really make the PSU work when overclocked to GTX480 performance levels - not had any random restarts or anything typical of when a PSU is overworked but the PSU fan spins up which according to the specs only happens at around 80% or higher load (depending on ambient temp).

should be ok, a recent vortez review shows 480 sli drawing a peak 752w with a core i7 920@4ghz but that's with occt and msi kombuster running which is not at all representative of game load. incidentally they ran that set up perfectly with a tx850 v2

i havent got anything on my system overclocked and i dont run furmack or benchmarking programs so this should be fine right ??

i think it'll handle it, but u'll be close to the limit

at least decent psu's like antec are fine with pushing to the limit

hi
imo thats cutting it close . you will be pushing that psu too hard . do you have enough pennies to buy a new 1kw psu then a 480 later on .

You won't need 480 SLI!

Personally, I wouldn't do it

+1

480 SLI is incredible performance in return for loads of heat, noise and power draw. You only need that if your playing at a massive resolution with every setting at maximum.

If you are still convinced you want to do it, have a look on the Nvidia website for PSU's which are certified for 480 SLI. I would be amazed if 750W is enough.

Did a lot of looking into it. Many places will show the max peak at just under 800 or just over. Bare in mind psu's degrade with time, faster if they are put under load. Reviews that didn't use furmark for the testing and instead used more realistic benchmarks still showed it at over 750w peak in some cases.

Personally you'd be a fool imo. I bought a 950w corsair to run 480s in the end though I've yet to pick up the second one.

Well since two gtx470's in SLI killed my Seasonic M12 850W psu, I would say no.

The cables melted on the psu power leads.

Running 470 sli on a corsair HX850 here, cpu at 4.2ghz, cards at 750/1500/1674, on stock voltage of 0.987. In game they pull 630w ono according to my power monitor, furmark tops out at 740w ono. Prime95 and furmark together was showing a draw of 860w, stopped that one pretty quickly.

ok fellas :) thanks for the advice

ill look into getting a new psu and another 480 when i decide to go with 3 monitors at high res
