Why are the Liberal Democrats seen as a Labour alternative...

not really, just an urban myth, the Tories bleed the economy dry and labour spend into oblivion.

Neither approach works.

If Maggie and Major had done such a great job, why did labour sweep to power with such a huge majority?

The Economy was doing fine in 1997.

It is true that unemployment fell under Labour. It's also true the state sector grew enormously, but what good is that if it's all artificial growth funded for by debt? No responsible Government would run up such a deficit in the 'boom' times. Brown's Golden Rule was an absolute joke too.

Is that based on manifesto or historic philosophy?

EDIT: Either way, that diagram kinda proves my point with regards to the Lib Dems being more Conservative than Labour, depending on which way you read it anyway... :p

It's based on the 2010 manifestos. You can read the analysis on the link. Historically, i.e. prior to Blair, the Labour party were around where the Greens are.

And just for a laugh here is my political compass...

Which in some ways is a little odd... I admit I do find some of the Green manifesto promises to my liking (and would seriously consider voting for them if they were in with a chance) yet I do tend to agree more generally with Conservative manifesto...:p

What, like under AV? :p

But yeah, i've heard tons of people say that they would vote green if they either had a representative or had a chance of getting in.

No responsible government would run up a deficit in 'boom times' eh? http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2010/oct/18/deficit-debt-government-borrowing-data

lol.

Actually, having just re-read the Conservative and Green manifestos I remember now why I didn't vote Green (although there was a little of the "wasted vote"), I strongly agree with a lot of their policies yet strongly disagree with a lot of them too. Yet a lot of the policies I agreed on I strongly disagreed with the way they planned to implement them...

On the other hand I disagreed with some of what the Conservatives manifesto said but didn't strongly disagree anywhere near as much...

Does make my chart even more confusing now I've actually read what it's are apparently based on...

And yeah, potentially like AV (which I did vote in favour of actually;))

EDIT: Obviously I'm missing something because I don't understand how the Greens are in the Liberal Zone and Conservatives are in the Authoritarian zone when most of the Green policies seem to revolve around forcing companies and people into doing what they will by taxing and legislating whereas Conservative policy seems to be almost the polar opposite... To me that means Conservatives being more liberal than the Greens?

It's not the most comprehensive. It's quite narrow in scope of offering as well.

I'm actually economically right, but because I question the appropriateness of business actions it lumps me over to the left...

Too many assumptions made from the data provided.

Because people are idiots and forget the history of the liberal democrats.

The Lib Dems are effectively a coalition of two groups, who share a common theme around social freedoms. On the centre-right you have the old Liberal party, on the centre-left, the SDP.

The Lib Dems picked up a lot of protest voters from Labour, but they were never really a party of the left.
