Fountain Pens?

Since the last page of the AS/A Levels thread has turned somewhat in to a fountain pen discussion, I've decided to open this thread.

It's been viewed as an archaic instrument nowadays, but does anyone on OcUK still use one for their writing duties?

I use a fountain pen, a lower range Waterman but it does it's job. Extra fine but it is a little scratchy tbh.

I've got a pretty bog standard Lamy, fairly cheap and ubiquitous at WHSmith and the like. The ink flow is superior to any comparatively priced rollerball I've used, very comfortable to write with.

Wouldn't bother with any of the serious implements myself though, not skilled enough with calligraphy to actually use them properly, but the Lamy ones are great because even a ham-fisted individual such as myself can use them to great effect.

Fountain pens? What are we, 19th century

Biros are much better, when I don't use a pencil...

I use a Cross fountain pen with a refillable "pump" cartridge thing and some black ink. It's a lot nicer than using a ball-point and I've been using it for about two years now.

Yup, my writing is horrible if I use anything else, I like the resistance a fountain pain provides.

Little collection growing. ;) (sorry for the shoddy focus)

From the top: Noodler's Dark Matter, 2x 1745 (F nibs), Parker 45 (F/M nibs - I have both), Parker Arrow (M nib) and Parker 75 (M nib, bling yo!)

I've not used one in 20 years.

Bic Biro ***!

+1

Only Bic though, most of the other (disposable) pens are horrible...

Fountain pens seem to be largely used by stuck up people who like to somehow think they are better than others, somehow using an old fashioned pen is supposed to make them superior...?

Well in general, a fountain pen needs less pressure than a ballpoint, so for me, it's easier on my hand when writing long documents.

Depends if you get a good ballpoint tbh, something like a bic you can just roll across the page and it will ink.

I always find most writing done by fountain pen is really shoddy and difficult to read as well, dunno if that's just because people I know can't actually write with them or what...

Lamy user here!
I was taught to write with a lamy with a good 6 years of handwriting lessons, anything other than a fountain pen makes my handwriting pretty poor.

I used a Bic when I used to use ballpoints, best ones IMO.

Out of interest, what do you think of this?

I think I use a fountain pen for a few reasons: make my writing neater, doesn't require any pressure, makes me feel superior, and it's quite therapeutic refilling a cartridge from a pot of ink.:)
