Quiet an interesting read about what the future might hold for the next Xbox.

Article

Article raises some good points for further thought, like how to tackle the issue of system RAM and CPU's to use.

It is an interesting read but as you said in the title its just pure speculation. While in the past ram has octupuled with every generation there is no way they are going to drop 4gb in the next gen systems and I have to agree at this stage. The list of games that need or can even use more than 4gb on a PC can probably be counted on a lepers hand and of course the console OS' don't gulp memory like Windows does.

The other side of it is that developers have been pretty much complaining all gen that because of the power of the systems they are having to spend even more to bring the visuals up to match. If that goes up too far it's not good for the industry.

For me the interesting thing is going to be Sony. They won't want to burn cash like they did with the PS3 launch but they also won't want to let Microsoft get the edge on technology. The logical choice would appear to stick with the Cell architecture and just expand on it. PS3 games would be BC which so many seemed to cry about with the newer PS3s and the developers are now finally familiar with how to get the most out of it so should be able to push it earlier in the cycle.

On the flip side, it's still not supposedly that easy to play with so they may want to go elsewhere to make life easier for developers.

Microsoft on the other hand I fully expect to stick to tried and tested technology instead of trying to develop something proprietary like the Cell.

It's certainly going to be interesting to see and I just hope that we get two great consoles launched at about the same time.

I'm not really bothered about any bump in resolution or 3D or such things but I would like decent photo-realistic textures and all games 720p60. Nothing worse than having blocky textures. Plus realistic physics such as trees swaying, plants that get squashed as you move over them, etc.

To me this article is pointless.

Looking at the current top spec PC gear, it is easy to see what could be in a new Xbox. The reality is it's not so much of what could go in it, but what is really needed to deliver hi performance at a palatable price point?

The jump in PC hardware capability since the 360 was designed and previewed is immense. It really doesn’t need speculation. They don’t need to push the boat out or deliver something amazing and unique over today’s hardware to provide an excellent console. When the 360 was designed and by launch, a lot of home users (regular customers, not just enthusiasts) were still on single core solutions so the approach for the 360 was a big jump in hardware, especially over the original Xbox.

I am far more interested in what the console will offer as a streaming, interactive environment and home media hub. We all know it has the potential to play games at advanced graphics detail with AA etc. Any half decent £400-500 pc is capable of playing great games at high res. That side is wrapped up.

How will it link in with 3D technology and virtual / interactive gaming?

I just hope they allow for a larger RAM capacity for developers to utilise.

It's a large constraint on them currently. I believe CPU/GPU will end up either being ARM/AMD or intel/AMD.

developers dont need more ram they just need to know how to use what they got!

I hope they do use a major company for the GPU so that they find it easier to code for etc

i'm not really that bothered, games look good enough for me, i cant see how much more games can evolve.

I suspect the new consoles will have some slightly better graphics and the rest is stuff to squeeze more money out of us, intergration into god knows what.

It would be nice to have great pc graphics and stuff but in all honesty i'm not sure most people would notice or care and im also not sure that most peoples tvs are upto spec enough for it (admittedly im not a tv expert)

the next gen is all about them building business models and nothing in it for gamers apart from the integration.

Until a game looks like "real life" (i.e. you can't tell the difference between a video and a game) then there's still room for improvement.

Physics also has a long way to go.

Especially wind, water, fire and debris etc.

Plenty more to go with regards to visuals.

I'm happy with how they look though, im not bothered with them looking like real life

i want there to be a visual difference between real life and non real life, certainly for violent games / army games etc.

and i also don't believe we will ever hit that point.

There are still huge improvements to be made in gaming, and the NextBox and PS4 will have to be considerably more powerful than current versions to convince people to buy into them.

If it were only a slight upgrade, people wouldn't see the need to purchase, and consequently developers wouldn't see the need to develop for a console with small userbase.

I do think we will see the shift to consoles outputting (and rendering at) 1080p.

I do of course hope they go massive amounts of memory, rather than "just enough", to cope with nice high res textures :)

The next Xbox will use similar to current PC technology, probably a lower end card like a GTX 260 (260 isn't even low end but when this comes out it will be)

Just like the 360 did, it used a fairly low end card compared to what was out.

It will be a custom made 260/5770 I would take a guess at.

The next wii is a custom fitted 4850 apparently.

Its fairly predicatble, Xbox we'll be a PC in a little box and the PS4 will be an updated version of the PS3. Both will run on their current networks alongside their Dads.

Graphics wise they'll just do what was initially promised with the last gen, at least 720P, they simply cant output more than that because not everyone has 1080P TV's although I do think they will be able to output at 1080P I dont think devs will use it.

If thats the case, they are old before they are released in terms of hardware technology, they will always be limited by household TV's

They could easily render at 1080p and output at 720p.

When current consoles came out, it's not like everyone had an HD "ready" tele.

You dont remember all the marketing based on HD gaming? How many titles are actually 720P for the current gen? No where near as many as was originally made out. ANd 720P isnt exactly impressive, PC's have been gaming at that resolution for what, ten years?

What can easily render at 1080P?
