To neuter or not to neuter a dog?

He is for the most part. :)

I visit a lot of peoples homes for work, so get to see quite a range of pets. I think if I wanted a pet, particularly a dog, it would be a JR. The amount of times I've been sniffed and dribbled on though is very high :p

Hope you get sorted.

Whats wrong with making a dog live outside? If I had a big enough garden Max would live outside.

The whole peeing/crate thing is that dogs wont pee where they sleep, that is the whole point of crating a dog (for reference I didn't with Max I used a different approach).

So please don't tell me how to raise my dog, I bet your one of these people who think its wrong to smack children? We are not talking about "beating" a dog, a swift boot up the backend isn't going to hurt a dog unless you actually wallop it which isn't what anyone is suggesting, thats just how you are reading it.

i used to crate my dog, it was a place where she would feel safe, and she loves her sleep, every night she would come nudge us to put her to bed... and obviously theres the no peeing thing. She's a bit too big for one now, and it isn't needed, but theres nothing cruel in crating a dog. Just a secure place for them at night or when you're not around.

It's a jack Russell! Hardly a hunting dog which has been raised/brought up outdoors.

Jesus why does this discussion keep going back to hitting kids:/

You need to catch him IN the act if you're gonna punish him for anything otherwise you'll confuse the little fella.

Don't chop his balls off :(

jack Russell's are hunting dogs...

can't say i would keep my dog outside, but certainly wouldnt judge others for keeping them outisde.. They're dogs, they have nice fur coats..

What do you think Jack russells are bread for? Hunting rats and badgers.

As for the kids thing, its normally the case that those who see discipline as violence and believe its the same as dogs and children.

I was just making an assumption, but in my experience thats the case.

*Backtrack* Ok maybe I need some quote marks!

Yeah I get it's a hunting dog. Doesn't change the fact that it's a house pet and IMO can be dealt with with good training. Knips already said she's taught it to walk off the lead so thats a start, shouldn't be much of a jump to house train it.

Some studies have shown that aggression can worsen after neutering, I would personally suggest more training rather than risky surgery.

Make it live outside/crate it.

That is no solution to separation anxiety...

Yes she's asking on a computer forum if chopping his nuts off (which will, regardless of what the vet says, be a painful experience) will fix the problem of him peeing.

I've said that its down to training but the way to deal with it isn't through positive reinforcement or by telling a dog off after the act.

Pets are neutered because their unwanted pregnancies are the result of thousands and thousands of animals being put down every year. By not neutering your animal, you are potentially contributing to the holocaust which is unwanted pet destruction.

It's not a difficult concept to grasp. A lot of puppies can't be sold to other people, and pet shelters don't have room for them, so they get destroyed.

Apparently in the US, that's 3-4 million cats and dogs a year.

2) It's retardedly cruel and unnecessary when neutering him is an option.
We dont always catch him doing it, like I said he seems to sneak off, and sorry but there is no way I am going to start physically abusing my dog. :( Violence breeds violence, but thats not the point of this thread.

I know I'd personally rather be beaten than neutered!:p

Which is why I'm in favour of licensing to keep all animals.

KaHn

We have licensing in Northern Ireland still. Unfortunately it doesn't stop animals being neglected or abused. People just don't bother getting the license and the punishments are a joke. All it does (like many government statutes) is punish the legitimate owners and breeders.
