My New Car (Porsche Boxster S 987)

It wasn't a total out and out inpulse buy.

I'd been test driving potential cars for about 3 weeks, but had simply ignored the 2 seat sports car and entire Porsche brand as I didn't think I'd get a decent one for the money.

After driving the 335i and not really getting on with it and having to look into these a bit for a friend it pretty much just hit me.

I've no need for anything more than 2 seats, drive tiny milage anyway and could afford a really nice one with the top engine, decent spec and be covered by a good warranty.

Makes sense, looks like you found a fantastic one. How much did you get for your Bravo?

Just been browsing on PH.. Shocked they start at under £15k (albeit for a 2.7)
That sort of money gets you a decent 986 over here :(

I think I got just over £4k for the Bravo but the figures we're a little weird and I never looked at them properly as we only ever discussed a 'price to change'.

Shock horror that an unsporty 3 series is not exciting to drive though, its amazing what the BMW fanboys on here have managed to make seem like a normal opinion to have

Shock horror as hurfdurf trolling backfires - I told Peerzy that he may find the 335i dull before he drove it, so sadly he wasn't told, as you seem to beleive, that it was some sort of Porsche Boxster alternative.

The 335i is a competent sporting GT, it is not a sports car and never has been. For future reference, to help you out, BMW sports cars have a Z in the model name.

If it was a credible alternative to a Boxster I'd probably not like it..

Hey congrats, nice car. Like the Boxsters - great value for money now.

Ref the refined point - understand completely. Look at a 335 vs M3. On paper not that massively different, but when you're behind the wheel they're worlds apart.

Oh my god, I nearly said 'when I was your age....'.....

But when I was your age, I was driving around in Sapphire Cosworths and the like, and I used to get grief about the being young and stuff..... Imagine what cars you have to look forward too ;)

I'd agree it's not a sports car, more of a rapid GT..... But the Z part? Seriously? M3/M5/M1/M6 are not sports cars when compared to say a 911 or Boxster? Serious question, I'm not trying to bait you. As a consumer of such cars, the 911's and Boxtsers go in the same bag as the M3/5/1/6's of this world.

The Boxsters don't, no. There's probably very little a Boxster could achieve against an M3 or M6. You wouldn't pitch it against an M5 as that's a 4 door saloon car.

The closest BMW offering is the Z4 and that's about it.

A BMW M5 is a crushingly competent near supercar. But it's a near two-tonne saloon car. It isn't a sports car.

Whereas a Mazda MX5, for example, is a sports car. A sports car is a car engineered from the ground up to be just that - a sports car. An M5 is a BMW 5 Series - a fantastic saloon - which has been very well fettled by M division. It is not a ground up sports car.

Hmm, yeah, ok, some fettling with words really. You get Car A that can outperform Car B in practically every department I think the badge you give it may not be that important.

I guess there's a danger of swapping outright power and performance (some people's perception of a sports car) with say a balance of power and agility?

It's arguable what's a sports car and what isn't.

I just don't think it's as clear cut.

I have car A - it does this, does it well, and it's *fun". You take car B, it does A, B & C faster.....but happens to have 4 doors and a boot.

One man's sports car is another person's shopping trolly.

You think so? Maybe.

2 seat boxster, only equivalent BM is is the Z4. Fair play.

I think the term 'sports car' is a bit soft though.

[EDIT]ed to add, I'm not trying to argue with anyone :p
