whats the spec of your computer? 850W may be overkill for it

I've just ordered a 480 GTX SOC so I need to upgrade my PSU from an olde 460W (which has lasted me 8 years and powered my 8800gtx). I thought about getting a 850W because I might like to SLI the 480GTX in the future. Will 850W be able to do this?

A good PSU will do that. It's 850W on furmark, but games don't stress as much. If you want more room, I'd look into the OCZ ZX, CM Gold 1000W, or the Corsair TX series, not modular.

A quality 850w unit would be the minimum required for sli gtx 480's, more if you intend to overclock the cards and the cpu.

hehe - OK I'm not to worried about the appearance of the cables in my case - as I can't see them anyways!! It could look like spaghetti junction as long as everything is working...

It's more about air flow than just looks. Usually, you have space to tuck them away anyway, but it's more fiddly. Might be actually more difficult to find a good 1000W PSU non-modular. Corsair TX950 would be a good bet.

Ah yes..thanks..airflow, that is important. Seeing that the prices of modular PSU's aren't much more expensive - i guess I'll get one.

Dang - that's a pricey PSU. But maybe it's worth taking the plunge and getting a PSU that will last a lot longer. Can you foresee graphics cards needing more than 1000W in a few years time?
