Kids Deliberately Walking Into The Road

I once watched a young reveller of Plymouth sprint across North Hill (From Cuba towards the SU for those that interested) which is a very busy road of a Friday evening.

This inebriated, yet suprisingly swift individual was putting on his best blinkered Linford impression only to just miss the car coming downhill by a gnat's whisker - the audibly cringeworthy "OOoooooOOoohhhhssSSS!" of those watching were soon silenced as he proceeded to roll over the bonnet of a vehicle travelling up the hill :p

Fortunately he was in talks with whiskey that evening as it made him supple and rubbery enough to walk away with seemingly no damage!

I've had two incidents of this lately, first was a group of kids playing chicken which didn't really effect me because I just carried on as normal and they ran out the way.

The one that wound me up was the two "skin eads" that looked, saw me coming down the hill and purposefully swaggered out at a nice slow pace, I thought, that's odd, they seem to value their lives even less than I do, must have missed the wing mirror by about 6inches, so he turned around and started shouting obscenities... I swear, you have normal people who get along in society, then you have these.... things, who can't even manage a simple task like crossing the road without causing agro. /rant.

I'm still waiting for someone to post a story where by some kids are playing chicken, and the driver continues on and then the kids die. That would be funny :D

Its not funny (unfortunatly) and I did post about it a few posts back. Was some kids doing it near where I live and a pensioner didn't react in time and hit one was only like ~5mph but kid hit her head on the curb and died a few days later, unfortunatly doesn't end there either - not sure on the exact details but her dad attacked the old guy and he died of a heart attack.

Happened to me a few times, or I've been in the car when it has happened. Mainly lads, and its like they're trying to say 'IM THE BOSS' by forcing you to slow down or stop, basically chavs with attitude problems.

Or when at a big event, people walking on roads etc, when cars are permitted to go down you'll still get lads ignoring you even though they know you're behind them and give you the stare if you get close too them.

Cocksure Chavs.

I guess its not funny, but I do believe if you take the risks, you take the consequences. No sympathy for dead kids if they're doing stupid things.

Started around here too, on dual carriageways no less, been a fair few incidents in the last few weeks, no fatalitys thank god but none the less why would they do it,its something that never even entered my head at their age.

They move eventually, when they realise you are not going to stop they soon get out the way.
They do it a lot in front of trucks.

the problem is that all it takes is a slip/fall/trip and then you've hit a kid at 30/40. sadly not really worth the risk

Goverment have "rules" for pedestrians its called the green cross code if you haven't heard of it ...

"D. If traffic is coming, let it pass. Look all around again and listen. Do not cross until there is a safe gap in the traffic and you are certain that there is plenty of time. Remember, even if traffic is a long way off, it may be approaching very quickly."

It doesnt say step into the road when you feel like it, meander across as slow as you feel like, you have right of way.

LOL the green cross code are not government rules. it was an awareness program that came out years ago to educate the public, mainly children, to the danger of crossing the street.

As has already been said the only thing that highway code says about pedestrians and cars is that pedestrians always have right of way.

Clipping them with your wing mirror or any other part of your car makes you liable for vehicular assault. All it would take would be for one of them to take your licence number and call the cops saying "I was crossing the street and this guy hit me with his car" and in a lot of towns now there would probably be CCTV footage to back him up.

And in extreme cases if you speed up when approaching them and a copper sees it he could actually charge you with attempted vehicular manslaughter.

As wrong as it may seem that's the law.

The kids obviously know this and are taking advantage of it.

This has happened to me, however I have Skimmed a kid. It did hit him but just alittle. The cocky kids kept on going on the roads for fun and they do it as soon as a car is driving past, its like a dare type of game. Anyways once i skimmed him that taught him a lesson.

Remember its their fault if they walk into you

The green cross code is actually mentioned in the pedestrian section of the Highway Code. Although not every section is enshrined in law nearly everything in it can be prosecuted against you/they are willfully breaking it (Public Order offence, loitering on highway etc)
