Cyclists

How apt.. This morning I came round an empty large dual roundabout in Chelmsford. Turning right and indicating so (which is more then what most motorists do), a large van was heading toward my left just before my exit. Noticing he hadn't slowed down nor seen me I rightly slowed down.... a heavy screech of his brakes followed by the mandatory abuse. I just carried on afterwards. I felt I was right to slow right down.. If he hadn't seen me I would have been history. I normally make sure I get eye contact on drivers giving way.. Poor chap dropped his phone.

Says it all really :p

Your right though, the amount of people who don't indicate when they are using a third exit on a round about (read: further round than half way) is just ridiculous...I would do so many people over if you was allowed to dob in bad motorists

It would help if local authorities started to provide proper cycle lanes that segregated bikes from motor vehicles - painting a bit of the road blue (as they've done for the cycle 'superhighways' hah! in London) is next to useless.

I commute on a bike most days across central London and it's a risky business - motorbikes deciding to use the cycle lanes to make progress, lorries and buses straddling the cycle lane and everyone ignoring the stop lines and intruding into the cycle bay at lights.

There are plenty of cyclists who are knobs as well. I tend to find it's the lycra-clad Lance Armstrong wannabe brigade (seriously, why do people feel the need to dress like they're in the Tour de France just to go 3 miles to work? Weirdos).

I was also in the centre of the road.
The moments before the impact the driver was on the horn and was clearly not slowing down or taking any action to avoid hitting me. They carried on and crashed into a ditch and hedge, the car air bags also deployed.

Fairly reckless driving I would say.

Thats shocking mate - did you get the police involved?

Aye..Issue is, without extending the road or shortening the pathways, you can't do that :p Especially in old areas

Rats with wheels.

Really dislike cyclists but I think that is more because of the provisons (or lack there of) for cyclists in the UK. There is bound to be varying degrees of conflict in such a poor system where people are forced into situations where one or the other inconveniences the other.

Now in the Netherlands when I visist my mates I have no problems driving over there with the cyclists. The roads are correctly set up to allow for both motorised vehicles and cyclists with no conflicts. Plus the fact that they all grow up with this system as the norm and so tolerance has grown in from both sides, over here no one wants to give any ground to the other creating conflict.

in truro they are building a new cycle path seperate from the road but only for part of the way, the rest of the way you have to go up a REALLY steep road thats V narrow and cars drive V fast down.....
thats gonna be fun!

Interesting viewpoint expressed by a work colleague of mine on this subject today.

"People are selfish and ignorant but mostly selfish. Their transport choice just allows us to experience this."

I think his point was that we're all as bad as each other. He's probably right.

Well here (In Dundee) cyclists and cars get on just fine. I am always given plenty room and never received any abuse. I cycle every day in the city centre. It must be more of a problem in England.

He most certainly is right.

People are naturally selfish when dealing with people they don't know or care about. Some people are more polite than others at least.

That is certainly and apt description for some cyclists but it is also fitting for quite a few motorists.

Oh I don't disagree, it goes both ways.

It takes two to tango blah blah, as I said I think its the system where I can have totally differing viewpoints in differing countries probably because of;

Worst I've experienced as a driver is cyclists cycling on the pavement of a main road, then just willy nilly crossing the side roads. Almost took someone out as I pulled upto the giveway sign. Didn't think she realised how stupid she was.

It's the stupid British mentality adverse to all things sensible, rearing it's ugly head yet again.

Go to Holland or Denmark and see if cyclists get abuse there. How a motorist can think that someone performing a healthy energetic activity in the open air is annoying and stupid, even if said cyclist isn't being annoying or stupid, just sums up Britain and the Brits in general imo.

I feel naughty for posting this haha. In no way do I condone this but yeah there is a culture for it.

And look, none of the cyclists here are condoning this video (apart from the OP). In fact some of you are praising it and stating how good it is. It's idiotic. The community (cyclists) should speak up to stamp out these things for the good of all people that use the roads and pavements. That 'race' is a menace and does nothing for the view of cyclists. Likewise, people in this thread that are saying that they love it are just as daft.

There's a reason people dislike cyclists, and this video proves why. They are moronic inconsiderate pain in the rears and the community as a whole does nothing to curb this.

Why are you generalising from that video? That is like saying drivers are moronic because some of them are idiot boy racers.

He isn't generalising from the video, he is generalising from the responses to the video. Most motorists when presented with an idiot boy racer video will happily call them idiot boy racers rather than praise them for their iresponsibility.

Easy solution to cyclists, put fog horns on cars when they try and jump a light give them a good 10 second blast
They will either lose their hearing in one ear stopping them from maintaining their balance and ultimately cycling or learn their lesson :p whichever comes first
