Right .

Basically last week I responded to an email sent to me about issues a replacement system had from one of my mates at work. I responded with:

"Basically, XXX is an abortion of a system replacement….

Noticed this and just laughed at how pathetic it was. It is utter litter."

Now unfortunately I did a reply to all, which went to everyone in the IT team.

FAIL

My intention was for it to only go to my mate, and was only meant as a private joke.

Understandably management have kicked right off about it. I've had a bollocking from my boss, his boss, and now the big boss wants a word. When talking to the other two I simply held my hands up, said sorry and that is was a stupid thing to do. Their problem is some new starters read it, and also that the company has spent a lot of time and effort with this systems replacement. My comments weren't helpful and I guess insulted them.

I'm due an almighty bollocking from the big boss, and I accept that. What I want to know is how do I approach this? I want to go in there with a bit of a speech, game plan, etc. Anyone else been in a similar situation?

Go in with humity, and apologise and grovel. You may be right about how crud it is but no need to try and defend what you said by justifying it. Just make up some bull about having a bad day, being jilted by a girl etc and say it was a momentary lapse and of course the email was intended for only one person in private.

In the current climate just grovel and hope they dont try and get rid of you im afraid. Ive been looking for work to suppliment my self employment now for 6 months, and even applying for shop drone positions is like applying to run the UN!

Its at times like this you wish you were a drop dead gorgeous big boobed blonde lol :p

Hands up tbh. You’ve already done that with the two others why bother changing your story now and risk antagonising him. They will only find out over their next sherry in the club anyway whilst they lol at how little they made you feel.

Never done anything like that, but just don't try to shift blame is my advice.

Accept you made a mistake and it was a once-off and not meant to be sent around the office.

Not much you can really do. Just take the bollocking and don't take any sick days for a while :p

Bring an RPK, some ammo, and steal his CC details.

On a more serious note, just act cool, dont get nervous or anything or you will start talking gibberish.

You could stand by your words and argue that the system is bad. Come up with a mini presentation about what's wrong with it, how you would replace it, what you'd replace it with and how much money it would make/save the company in the long run. Then, you'd come out with a promotion rather than your P45 :D

Just explain your actions and promise it wont happen again, and if need be explain your worth to the company and what you have provided.

I went through this exact thing (a lot worse actually, chatlogs got found!) and I got off with a final written warning. Does your company have any IT policy / HR Policy?

I hate to tell you this but they've probably made up their mind on what to do with you. Hopefully its nothing too bad :)

FWIW: My friend in the BBC told me that someone earlier this week sent a message out to the entire company pretty much telling them to F off in a faux pas similar to this. So you could be in a worse situation :)

I admit, what I did was wrong. I've worked here 7 years and it's no news that my mouth gets me into trouble. It's who I am.

I'm a bit annoyed at my boss for going to the big boss and effectively grassing me up when he could have dealt with this himself. I'll take whatever he wants to say to me. I've done a lot of good work for this company including projects, working out of my contract hours, support, training, call out, traveling, etc. I hope this goes in my favour.

Strongly considering arriving with my resignation but unfortunately I've got a mortgage and bills to pay.

He had to really as if the big boss found out before your boss told him, he would have questioned as to why he wasn't informed. In any case he would have found out when your boss disciplined you.

someone where I work in a massive government organisation, got off something similar by saying he forgot to lock his workstation and "someone else must have done it for LOLs"

which was a total lie but it worked and they couldnt pin it on him lol

I wont go down that road on here, but lets just say I'm not a fan of it and their biggest mistake was not involving me from the begining.

I wouldn't resign over that.

It was a mistake that will cost you but I doubt you'll lose your job over it.

I would just accept the consequences and try and put it behind you and if the big boss says "what would you rather do?" just say, your mum.

If you really wanted to go out with a bang. :p

Seriously though, I think you know what to do yourself but don't throw in the towel so soon.

Stand by your guns and say it, then! You still might get a rollicking, but they've got to admire your steadfast self-belief.

We have all done it, or even worse!

One of our old collegues messed up big time sending an e-mail, so I went to forward it to my mate in work and said

"She has ***** up again, useless!!!"

Accidently selected reply to all instead of forward, so not only did it go to that woman, but various other people!

Star out the swear word please.
