Cyclists

dont they just attach around the seat pole?

My pannier rack bolts to the bike frame. The front bolts to the seat pole yes, but it also bolts to the rear hub area. Just wondering how platypus's bike doesn't cater for a pannier rack and whether it's common.

Anyway this is OT, I'll take it to the Road Cycling thread in Sports Arena.

Do you drive close to cars in front because you assume they're capable of maintaining 30mph? Or do you drive at a safe distance in case they have to slow down?
I would actually follow the highway code and slow down to give them enough room, EVEN IF they have cut me up... another point i have said... repeatedly

I assume everyone is going to do something dangerous and unpredictable, which is why i have never had an accident in the 10 years i have been driving

I don't see the point in posting any more, no-one is reading anything and just typing crap out of context, being pedantic, or continuously trying to go on a tangent (considering my original post was to indicate both the driver AND the cyclist were in the wrong, a fact some cyclists have difficulty grasping and where it is now)

because I think it is,
why? i don't believe i actually have to explain this its not exactly the greatest leap in logic..

why the fact they can't maintain their speed is important:
while the cyclist is going 30 right now they will not maintain that speed indefinitely thus depending on the situation taking over while the roads are empty and safe may be preferable to doing it later

Why you should slow down EVEN IF the other party is being reckless:

Source: the highway code.

If the cyclist is moving at the speed limit it is illegal for you to overtake them as you would have to break the speed limit to get past. The highway code is just asking people not to be idiots (speeding up when someone tries to overtake you) and to compensate for the idiots (slowing down if someone tries to overtake you where it's not safe to do so). There is nothing in there that says 'if you are travelling at the speed limit and someone wants to overtake you then you must slow down to let them pass'. If someone is breaking the speed limit in order to get past you, and doing so where it's not safe (oncoming traffic/obstacles in the road/blind corners etc.) then the Highway Code suggests slowing down to let them pass, in the interests of safety. That is not the same as 'drivers are allowed to break the speed limit to get past cyclists'. The driver in that situation is being a pleb, putting lives at risk all because he can't abide by the rules of the road (and should therefore have his license to drive on the roads removed).

On the overall topic, I'm all for harsher penalties on irresponsible cyclists, but I think it needs to be accompanied by harsher penalties on motorists too. If people can't demonstrate that they can use the road in a safe and responsible manner then they shouldn't be on it, no matter what vehicle. I've got as much of a distaste for irresponsible cyclists as I have for irresponsible motorists (though the motorist is arguably the more dangerous).

decent road bikes tend not to have rack mounts

the ribble winter/audax is a good example of one that does. it also has space for guards etc

Cyclists really GRIND MY GEARS :p

The amount of times there is a massive queue to work because of a cyclist - Makes me want to open the window and push them off as I drive by :p

You sound like the rational and responsible type of motorist which we need more of on our roads.

Ride on the pavement?

Yes please! With cherry on top.

And break the law?

You gotta be pretty unlucky to have a jobsworth of a policeman nick you for riding a bike on a pavement :p But still - if you wouldn't mind - I gotta car to drive on the road. :D

and mow down pedestrians?

I'm sure you can squeeze past. There's a good cyclist :)

Some Cyclists are awful. One day on my way to work there was a a group of them (all kitted out in cycling gear e.t.c so they were obviously regulars) that just went straight through a red light at a junction on an A road, dual carraigeway. So they were basically flying through in front of me after my light had gone green to turn into the road. I had to slam on my brakes, most of them just carried on by laughing...I was thinking " yes, how hilarious you almost got yourself killed or seriously injured"

To be fair, one of them stopped suddenly and half fell off his bike and mouthed apologies to me.

Idiots.

Good thing your opinion is wrong then, isn't it really. Have you ever read the highway code incidentally?

Incidentally, I have.

Most cyclists I've spoken to have been complete tools.

"I have just as much right to be on the road as you do."

Puurrleease... Start paying road tax and I might reconsider.

I'll pay 'road tax' for my bike on the same basis as I do for my cars. How would that suit you?

It doesn't matter what your opinion is as cyclists do have as much right, so tough
