Anti-Foglight Brigade

I dont have a problem with people having fogs on in rain if visability is extremely poor.

Same.

For some reason I thought they werenow being called something else now rather than fog lights, because they are to be used at times of very low visibility regardless of the weather type.

I only use my windscreen wipers when its windy

:D Lol.

On a more serious note. I personally never use my fog lights unless absolutely necessary. If the downpour was really as bad as the OP made out, then I too would use my rear fog light. I can't think of a single situation where my front fog lights have helped me out.

I was once driving to Portsmouth on the A3 and there was an immense downpour. Heaviest rain I had ever experienced. I could barely see the rear lights of the cars in front, and some didn't even have their bloody lights on! I put my rear fog on and never got flashed once. Other cars that had their rear fog(s) on could be seen much easier, and there wasn't any glare to speak of. The only time there should be glare from the light is if it is pitch black or the weather isn't bad enough.

I'd rather someone be able to 100% see the back of my car than maybe not and go ploughing into the back of me. With my car however, my rear lights are quite high up, and my fog very low so it rarely causes an issue. If I was in a lowered, small car, I'd want my rear fog(s) on definitely. (in that kind of weather).

Rear fog in heavy rain for sure, when I struggle to see the normal lights on cars in front I'll put my rear fog on.

front fogs do **** all in any weather, I couldn't care less if they were on off or dragging on the floor.

Front fog light = gay - fact.

Rear 'high intensity' lights can be useful - just make sure you turn them off when you have another road user behind you at a distance that makes your rear high intensity lights more of a hindrance than a help :)

If you need the light on but someone might be getting dazzled then they are too close.

IIRC fog lights must not be used when visibility is greater than 100m and must be on when visibility is lower than 50m.

They dazzle other drivers, because while they are low on the car they are not dipped. That and the light reflects off the road surface, particularly when it's wet.

You shouldn't have had your fog lights on. That's why you were flashed.

Can't say that I've ever been blinded by fog lights (plenty of times by full beams though!). I personally find that the front fog lights illuminate the edges of the road, which are missed by the normal dipped headlights.

Unless you are literally driving at a crawl (as you would in properly heavy fog), being able to see the side of the road a little better a couple of meters in front of you isn't going to help.

They are meant to be angled towards the floor, which is in effect dipped ;)

As someone who actually drove through Dartford this afternoon/evening, including on the M25/A282, there were points where visibility was very very bad and fog lights would have assisted.

Er - no :confused::confused:

Use your mirrors - that's what they are for. Modern high intensity rear lights are too bright, making distinction between normal rear lights and brake lights difficult to see - especially in bad conditions when seeing brake lights as early as possible is paramount. When the vehicle following can see you - turn them off.

Have a bit of common sense.

Front fog lights are still only used by idiots though. Fact fact fact. :)

They don't have any prisms in like real dipped headlights though. So even if they are 'angled down a bit' the light beam is still dazzling when it isn't foggy.

In a heavy downpour I prefer that people use their fog lights and I will use mine too.

If fog lights are dazzling you in daylight and through the mist of heavy rain, then you are either too close or need your eyes checking.

True. Only problem is that most cars won't let you turn on your rear fog(s) without also turning on the front fogs. But I suppose looking like a prat is better than getting rear ended.

Still, what the other guy said about the rear fog being mistaken as a brake light is just as valid.
