dog shot 40 times then buried alive

All air guns need a licence in Malta, don't they (according to wiki)? Presumably it will be relatively easy to find the culprit

Don't know how many of the population there own air-guns?

Some sick people in this world. Reminds me of when a dog was put in a cage and then set on fire near my uni. And to have the rope, the dug hole and the gun all point to someone who almost definitely planned this in advance.

They need to be caught before this is done again or they go after a person.

If they will do that to a dog, they will probably rape, steal and kill people as well. The world is a better place without them.

That's a bit of a leap, and you can't go around assuming things of people you can't prove, that's just not how things should work today. Maybe you're right, but innocent until proven guilty. What about this - would you then also support that a rapist should be put to death? What about a murderer or manslaughter? Those crimes are treated more seriously than killing a dog, but we've moved away from that practise many years ago. There's a lot of implications in supporting capital punishment. Maybe this is getting a bit OT, but it's an interesting debate to have.

I'm quite sure he meant the dog was harmless.

I did, thanks for clarifying.

Murder and rape, definitely. Manslaughter, no.

I'm surprised the dog wasn't dead already. No idea how you survive 40 pellets to the head. The people/person who did that should be ashamed, it's very wrong. I don't think we should advocate capital punishment to deal with it though, unlike most here. I love dogs too, and it was totally harmless, but killing someone for it? I'm not sure if that makes you worse than them or not!

I think it would be fair to subject the perpetrator to the exact same treatment that he gave to the dog - if he died at any point during or after as a result so be it.

To shoot it 40 (!) times, then to bury it alive, and leave its snout in the open just so it suffers a bit more before it dies, just doesn't have words to describe it.

Should have the same done to him.

I don't agree, as I think that makes you as bad, and worse than the perpetrator, but I certainly respect your right to hold that opinion. I think many will agree with you, and I do think that punishments are too lenient as they are now, just that's a step too far for me.

That's old testament 'an eye for an eye' justice, and I'm not sure it's workable or appropriate for our modern society. Would you happily go through with that, if say, you had to do the shooting or the burying? I think it would be very unpalatable to even watch or know that the society finds that acceptable. It'd feel like we were reverting to past, savage ways. I can understand why people may feel like that though. I think it's an emotional response, or you're just a stone cold bad-ass. :p

Is it wrong that I find myself more shocked when I read things like this than when I read of cruelty to people?

Anyone have any idea why that might be? I am compassionate to my fellow human beings, but it seems more so when it comes to animals!
