as per thread title, does anybody still play this and how regularly????

for a beginner, whats the best class and packages(?) to choose.

Medic is definitely the best beginner class.

Stay behind the front lines, keeping everyone alive and helping the push forward.
This way, you don't die all the time, you learn the maps, and you learn what everyone is doing.

I still, occasionally play. For me, the Heavy has always been the easiest to play with though I would recommend you start off with the Medic to try and get a feel for how the other characters work, also, everyone loves a good medic, especially Heavies.

Get onto the Hampshire Heavies servers as they have a good community though they only really get going in the evening.

As for loadout, the stock weapons are as good as most of the others though the Scout's milkman loadout seems to be very overpowered for some reason. Each weapon is generally a trade off with something else. For example, if you choose the blackbox you're trading splash damage for hit damage, great if you're accurate as a soldier but useless if you can't hit anything.

I still play, it keeps getting lots of updates, collecting hats and crafting gets annoying so i ignore most of that.

I thought pryo was one of the easy classes to play, also good to annoy people with :)

Personally, I'd say Sniper is the easiest to play - requires the same good aiming as any PC game's sniper rifle, but you are far enough away from the action that you won't die every 30 seconds.

Antar, did you mean the Direct Hit? Black box gives you health regen on hits, DH is faster rockets +impact/-splash, IIRC.

I don't play anymore, as I get constantly owned by the guys with the new weapons :(

even more than normal, I mean

still play it every now and the was deffo better back before all these hats and weapons for someone just starting every class is easy realy just pick what your normaly good at =]

Not really a great starter class though since you'll be constantly backstabbed without any unlocks so easy Spy bait and you'll never really learn the maps! I'd go for Pyro or Medic, both fun classes.

I usually play as a Pyro or a Heavy, I'm not really in to Team Fortress 2 at all, I prefer the more serious nature of Counter Strike, but once every few months I'll have a craving to play Team Fortress 2 and it'll be the only thing I'll play for a week or two.

I usually do quite well as a Pyro, I don't really know anything about the new weapons, hats or anything else, I just want to kill people. I usually get called a "noob" because I play as a Pyro, don't know why, it's a proper class and it's there to be used, deal with it. It's probably just because I keep killing everyone. The Heavy is alright as long as you've got a Medic near to you but on the servers I go on no-one ever seems to be a Medic.

I used to love TF2 but I stopped playing it for a few months and now it's so different. All these hats and weapons. It's a new game now.

I used to play tf2 all the time and now I don't. Its just I got put off the game due to the all updates and I never catch up, new weps, hats and features. I just gave up trying to achieve them all, it gets too time consuming.

TF2 is still by far my favourite game. Only thing that annoys me is i've been playing for years and still don't have all the items from the polycount pack.

For a beginner, you need to realise that a 24 player server and a 32 player server are almost two different games. Depending on the map, Scouts can be seriously nerfed by 32 player servers and Pyros can become crushing monsters.

Obviously 32 slot servers can be more spammy, which can be fun but I find TF2 suits duelling between small numbers of players when not on/near objectives and the extra players hampers this a lot. Expect to begin with if you start on these bigger servers that if you go to smaller servers you may initially struggle, because you'll have had less experience dealing with one on one class duels and the like.

Edit.

Also, focus on the achievements. Some of them are hard/extremely situational for bragging rights, but most are not too difficult, and each class has three achievement 'milestones', each one granting you an item from the class' original update.

I stopped playing before the special bits started coming out, really doesn't appeal now.

Still play the odd game of TF1 though :D

Still play TF2, and have done since release pretty much!

Had a big break over my exam time, and starting to get back into it now. Medic and maybe pyro are good starting classes.

The special bits add variety to the game, and keep it fresh. The best thing is though, the extra weapons don't unbalance the game.

try UKCS servers they are all frienndly and have a massive community of mutiple source games i suggest soilder & maybe pyro to try first

not played since you could purchase all the rare drop items, whats the point i spent ages to get some dumb hat for some punk to pay for it. **** them all!

I'm not so sure. I know that when I'm playing spy and see a sniper with a razorback, I just shoot him. Much easier than trying to stab them twice, so the sniper is likely to be just as dead. Plus as a sniper I prefer to have either the smg or the jarate in the second slot instead, much more useful.
Basically, if a spy gets behind you, you're pretty much dead regardless. If someone is really annoying me then I may switch to the razorback, but rarely.
