New PSU advice

Hi guys,

I'm looking for a new psu to replace my aging Coolermaster 450w.

My Rig
Phenom ii x3 OC
5850 OC
4 gig ram
1 hard drive and 1 dvd/rw

I'm really that bothered about it being modular but it would be a plus. I don't want to spend anymore than £80 - £85 on a new psu if possible.

I would recommend one of these, especially the XFX as it's a seasonic unit, which are very good.

Also the one you selected is out of stock, and there are different wattage versions of the XFX and OCZ.

But your system could run off a lot less if you wanted to save money, perhaps the

XFX Pro 550W Core Edition Power Supply £50.99

I'm always telling people not to skimp on the PSU. I recommend this as the bare minimum, I realise it's slightly over budget at £96.98 inc VAT.

There's a difference between skimping and going OTT.

There's no need to spend the best part of £100 on a PSU for that rig.

That rig isn't going to last for ever, it would be better to buy a high quality PSU that can be re-used.

650W is good enough for single GPU. So Corsair, XFX, Antec. For your rig, I'd take the XFX Pro Core 550W if you are price conscious, or a 650W if you want a bit more room for later upgrades.

In any case, I'll take one of the three makers above over CoolerMaster. The XFX range (Core, XXX, Modular)performs really well and is good value. Corsair have better rep and better customer service but more expensive.

I would'nt recommend them to anybody now. It's ridiculously overpriced compared to January when it was £65!! Antec need to have a re-think on their pricing.

dunno, OcUK could have gotten a whole crate of them on a deal ('dropped from the back of a lorry'?

). Good PSUs still, but yeah, now a bit steep.

Ive got the xfx 750s xxx Edition, great psu, really quiet, good looks to it as well. But saying that, you cant really go wrong with a corsair.

Sure. I'd still take the XFX 550W, or something more designed towards gaming for an extra £10. a 650W solid PSU, and you're set for pretty much anything. XFX Core 650, XFX XXX 650, Corsair TX650 V2, the XFX having 4 PCIE connectors for SLI, the corsair 2, but 650W will limit your options (6950 XFire / 560ti SLI at a push).

Crossfired 5850s wouldn't actually need anywhere near 850w. Rated at 600w.

+1 for the XFX 650w. But the Corsair TX650 at £70 is another option.
