150,000 miles ex police motorway patrol car

Not forgetting the rapists, paedophiles and burglars that have been in them.

I would not stop thinking about this, especially if I had my family in the car alas mum sitting where a skanky thieving burglar had sat.

I know this is all superficial but I couldn't justify the saving.

test drive em see what they feel like.

police cars will have been ragged, lots of high revs. but theyre also well maintained and serviced.

was looking at a few examples myself before.

as long as your carefull I imagine you could get a pretty decent car for the dosh

If you're buying the vectra VXR because you think its cheap.

It won't be. Seriously, forget the idea if this is about saving money.

Would be better if you just moved away from Vauxhall.

seconded.

= Can put an Insignia VXR turbo in it with full map for £2,000 here

I know i'll get ripped apart in this thread, but if you carried one of those idea's out, which would it be?

double no. The gearbox on the VXR isn't up to the job of standard power really. It couldnt cope with a basic remap. I've seen the problems a couple of the lads on the VXR forums have who fitted insignia turbos. Seriously you'd be in for a whole word of hurt.

Problem 1 - the standard cooling system is poor. Start upping the power and you will need an uprated water radiator and intercooler to cope with the increased heat from the engine

Problem 2 - the clutch isn't up to it. Start seriously adding power like the insignia turbo and you'll need an uprated clutch.

Just abandon all ideas you've got about tuning the Vectra VXR. I've not even listed half the problems you could run into....

My current mechanic was the manager of a police car repair centre.

I foolishly asked if a cheap volvo estate would be a good option (ex police)

Lets just say the answer was in line with most of the comments above. Servicing and maintenance isnt exactly the best, its the same as any garage really, they were not maintained "better" in any way.

Ive never considered even slightly ever again.

If you want a cheap ex-plod with a bit of power, get an Omega 3.2 V6 manual for less than a grand.

Example

But then again it's not much more for a normal 3.2 Omega with all the toys, trim, less miles and has had an easier life.

Lets not be silly here. If it had been crashed repeatedly into curbs enough to cause any sort of damage those components would have been replaced, no ifs, no buts, it just would.
The thing is, it's not the damage to the components that you can look at and go "oh yeah, that wishbone's bent" or "that bush is mangled - needs new ones", it's the fact that the entire car will literally be shagged. All the mounts and bushes and bolts that are not part of typical maintenance and that don't offer immediate signs of wear, but will contribute to a thousand rattles, bumps and squeaks and the car never aligning properly, are what will become annoying.

and its not as if the vectra has a quality interior thats going to withstand this sort of abuse either ...

Lets just bring this back down to the bottom a second:
ALL THAT risk, worry and general abuse and at the end of the day you're getting, wait for it.......
A Vectra.
No Not the best vectra available either, its not really a vxr per-se because a vxr would have nice interior for a start and more resale than a botched up police spec car.
at the end of the day its a vectra thats been mashed about and has disgusting interior with evidence of its past life in its components, engine, and exterior also.
At the end of the day vectra VXR's are all power and nothing else anyways, now at least if it was a ex-police st focus rs or a 3 series/5 series or a mondeo st you would be getting a car that is good all round, yeah the same things all apply but at least the end product is a good car. All those negatives to end up with something ****? No Ta. I can think of far better places to put your money, even if they are older.

tell ya what, if they would take 2k for it. i personally would take the risk onit. would be fun at the lights at least haha.

Work with these cars day in day out, based at the workshops, and can tell you now really don't buy it.

People go on about regular services etc etc, but it makes buggers all difference, if you see the way these cars are driven you would think twice about it.

Well, to go against the grain, even though its a Vauxhall (a marque that I'll never own again) as long as its been serviced properly and repaired accordingly, with a wedge of documents to back its history up, I would not be that bothered how its been driven.

£3k seems too high though.

They seem to want £15k for it so perhaps it was used for transporting gold bars?

Because thats the only way a 6 year old E46 320Ci is worth £15k.

Well, cash is tight for Police forces at the mo I suppose..... :D

I wonder if the car was used in C.I.D. or something?

what is it with all the bumming of mondeo's ? :/ buy a mondeo buy a mondeo!
pfttt, ford are just as dull as vauxhall

@op keep your vxr, better the devil you know. i dont think youd want to spend lots of money tuning a 150k car, the engine will be wearing..

I'd do neither as both suck but if I had to pick one it'd be the non police one for sure.

You'd need to be bonkers to buy an ex police car.

Bog standard response car used by 24/7 shifts, yes you would be bonkers.

Ex traffic cars are usually looked after, are well serviced and not hammered like many believe they are.
