Battlefield 3 Question.

As a reference:

I can max out shogun on a 480gtx at 1900x1200 with 4xaa and 16xAF. simply haven't tryed any more aa but I've not seen any indication of any slow down so I would suspect I could go higher. This is also with ultra sized units etc. Maybe it's because the 480 has 1.5gb ram.

Yet to plug my second 480GTX in so I shall maybe get fraps running and do some comparisons when I get around to it.

I would also agree with you, people are presuming these cards are more powerful then they are. I would suggest that if you can't max shogun you won't max BF3. BF2 required the top hardware at the time.

Its the MSAA that kills the fps...

I too am playing it maxed, with MSAA off.

What cpu do you have? Im thinking of upgrading mine, and hoping it will help my 5870 perform better.

Good info, the plan is, buy one 6950 then end of November sell it and get next gen 7950 or Nvidia.

otherwise I go the Xfire way with 6950 then upgrade 3 years later. (to be on safe side).

I want to make sure BF3 will run at 16:10 res with everything maxed out plus 4xaa and 8xAF.
CPU - 2500K @ 4.6

I'm using MSAA x4, am just lazy so I say aa haha. 2500k at 4.4ghz.

TBH amd usually aren't the best with AA.

Will the new Nvidia card be out by the time this game comes out? I could easily buy another 570 but I would rather have a single card.

I would not buy another 570.

Although SLI 570 is powerful, it will be bottlenecked due to lack of vram!

Nvidia should really have started putting 2Gb of ram on all their top cards.

Will it be be dependent on Vram or just plain processing power?

I have a 4890 2gb and was wondering if its worth upgrading to a 5870?

Its a difficult question to answer.

As far as I know, processing power is way more important than VRAM.

However the processing power of a gpu will reach a point where it has the grunt to process but not the memory space to store data.

Lets look at it this way, why have AMD bumped their gpus up to 2Gb and Nvidia started putting 1.2 up to 1.5Gb of ram on the gpu's?

Interesting, just wondering if I can get away with not upgrading as I have more vram than normal cards.

So is VRAM more limiting on normal cards or just processing power?

hmmm

A 4890 is still a decent card, I think.

Are you wanting a cheap but effective gpu upgrade so you gain Dx11 etc.....?

How much cash do you have to spend and whats the spec of the rest of the system?

I was just looking to be BF3 ready.

I don't game that much anymore but it would be nice to be able to play hassle free.

I have 4 gigs ram DDR2
Q6600 at 3.7/3.8
And a Vapour X 4890 2gib

I was just going to put a 5870 in there and hope for the best?

Also buget wise, I think I will get around £70 for the card as it is quite rare being 2gib VRAM and vapour X and then top it up to around £130/140 :)

^^^

You'd probably be fine with that. Frostbite 1.5 didn't really need four cores and I'd bet that 2.0 will utilise all four so you should be okay with your CPU.

I watched the whole twelve minute trailer and whilst it looks better than before it doesn't look "Next gen" in my opinion.

Ran on a 580 GTX, apparently no current set up can max the game but if that were true I'd suspect they'd of used the best setup possible in their trailer as that's what creates the most sales.

Yea, if your on a tight budget, between a choice of new cpu or new gpu for games, get a new gpu.

I would say as BF3 isnt out yet, wait untill it comes out and pick up a card then.

You be able to get a better card for the same money, maybe even one from the new series.

Yeh, I found the SSD the best upgrade ever and helps me load maps faster than most people.

Will wait until release and hopefully pick up a 5870 / whatever £140 will buy second hand
