New graphics card wanted! 2 choices!!

So the 5870 is more powerful but the 6870 is cooler and quieter (something i really want)....Really don't know which to go for now :/

IN terms of resale, 6870, noise and heat 6870, 'future proofing', 6870, in terms of raw power today, 5870, however each release of drivers will improve the 6870.

In short 6870

6870 is looking the best so far i reckon. He said i can have is for £90 and that is looking like a bargain compared with new ones!

So just to double check my Thermaltake TR2 550w will be fine?

and when i get it do i need to re install windows or just uninstall nvidia ones and then install ATI?

Thanks guys for the 5870 recommendation but the newer tech and 'future proofness' of the 6870 will be better i reckon.

Why the 6870 though if the 5870 betters it in nearly every game and res?

Also guys, if i was too buy it. Will i need to do a full reinstall of Windows? or can i just simply plug it in and then uninstall Nvidia drivers and install ATI?

Just uninstall your old drivers turn your pc off stick your new card in and install the drivers for it and your prity much sorted :)

so once again the OCUK forum recommends a slower more expensive card.

have AMD been using subliminal messaging in their adverts for the 6 series or something, its normally bad when its AMD vrs Nvidia but this is AMD vrs ATI/AMD.

Personally I would get the 6870 as it is newer tech and can handle DX11 better along with better x-fire scaling incase you change your mind later.

I would never buy old tech unless it is really really dirt cheap compared to a newer model

The XFX central fan 5870s are the worst 5870s there are though. No voltage unlocking I am aware of and poor overclocking potential. Clock the cooler quieter 6870 to 1K core and the difference will be negligible, and significantly in favour of the 6870 in DX11 (mostly the only games either of the cards might struggle with in the future.

all very well and good except the original poster hasn't mentioned overclocking and you cant argue with the 5870 being more powerful at stock settings and in this case cheaper too.

Well i just rang up my mate to ask about going round to get the 6870 today and he has sold it on the famous auction site! :(
I ring up Mr 5870 who has also now decided to go xfire!

So now i am back to square one!

Got around 100 for a graphics card guys, whats the best for my money?

seem to be louder and have higher failure rates than other 5series cards. Normally I would suggest a 5870 but in this case I think getting the cooler quieter 6870 and clocking it a bit to 1000 core or so would be the way to go.

It's far from loud plus it's not a hot card. 34c idle, 60 - 65c in Crysis 2 after an hour or so.

Missed out there on a couple of steals. Nevermind.

Would say the Sapphire 5850 is probably the best buy around this budget. The cooler is excellent. Silent at idle and very quiet at full load. At current pricing its OK but nothing special tbh as its been much lower.

+1 for the Sapphire 5850 - got one myself recently. As above, it's been found cheaper, but there's nothing else around the price really. Yes, it's worth going for the 5850 over the 5830 imo. Everyone seems to be clocking these cards to around 900/1200 with about 1.2v.

Just been looking through another thread on here and it seems OCUK were selling a 6870 in B-Grade for £99.99! Seems there all gone now though!

Whats better the Sapphire 5850 for 115 or the Asus B-Grade at 99.99?

I may also wait until next week and just see what prices drop as i am in no rush to get one with GCSE's coming up next week!

Well do you want to save the extra cash? Do you care about b-grade?

I'd be careful on the b-grade tho, upon further inspection the advert cooler details mentions 5830, but its called 5850 and looks like it has 5850 specs  Worth a call to OcUK IMO if you up for it i reckon. 5850 is quite a LOT faster than 5830.;)
