Hi all. A friend of mine has been editing a lot of videos on a AMD dual core laptop and it has been struggling a lot and overheating during long edits and rendering. It only has 2gb of RAM and no dedicated GPU. He wants me to spec him a really budget PC that will do the job without issues - speed doesn't really concern him, just useable and reliable. His budget is £300-400 but the closer to £300 the better. I'm thinking a cheap AM3 motherboard, 8gb of ram, a dual core phenom II 555 to unlock to quad, cheap hardrive, case and PSU.

However, integrated graphics or dedicated graphics - might be a silly question, but I'm not sure if editing prefers CPU or GPU.

Cheers in advance.

Edit: base unit only is needed.

Hmm... I was wondering if someone would spec an SB system. SB is very tempting considering power and efficiency gains. The hex core AMD is also nice, as is Stulid's system which adds SSD - or take it away and it's a very cheap system.

Can I assume that a dedicated GPU is not needed then?

dedicated GPU isnt needed, unless you plan on gaming

im just wondering how much better the SB is compared to the AMD hex, since SB cant be overclocked with that mobo

Not needed, but for that build panyan did you ain't got any onboard GPU, so either change the motherboard or add a cheap card.

What processor out of all the ones suggested here offers the most bang for the buck? I'm pretty sure he's not bothered by an SSD drive and 1TB of storage will be plenty (as he can add extra drives / SSDs later if he wishes).

Is the hex core slower than the SB above?

Yes, it looks like the SB is the best choice really if he wants the absolute best performance. However, it does come with a small price premium over a cheaper AMD system. I will see what he thinks, I'm betting he will be happy with a AMD system nearer the £300 mark than the SB nearer the £400 mark.

Thanks for your suggestions, if anyone has anything different I would appreciate any further suggestions.
