energy prices rise on the way.

19% gas rise, that's a pretty steep rise, there is just no transparency in how the increases in wholesale prices relate to the retail prices.

I always get the feeling we are being stiffed.

I just don't understand where all this price inflation is coming from , demand isn't that high due to the recession yet prices continue to spiral, god know what will happen if the World economy picks up!

Price of gas has gone up recently due to the nuclear incident in Japan, and hence them switching to LNG for their power. Although saying that the current gas price isn't that high if you look back over the past 5-10 years. However we import a lot more gas as LNG which is more expensive to transport than the gas that comes from the North Sea.

Think about it too much and you'll get depression living in the UK. Fuel prices, energy prices, food prices. We have a thread for each one. Nobody is getting paid anymore and I'm facing redundancy for the third time in three years. Just got to laugh it off and keep trying to live life. It's not sustainable like this and something WILL get done soon. People out there earning much less than you think you do, imagine how they are struggling.

Left Scottish Power last night too, 19% and 10% at once is a complete joke. Fixed with EDF until September next year now.

Would it be wrong to use the word cartel when talking about utility companies?

ofcourse not i bet the other major companies increase aswell they are buncyh of price fixing thieving ******** i dont understand how the goverment lets them get away with it its a disgrace!
Scottish Power made £1.3bn profit in 2009/10. If you look at Southern Energy, they made £2.1bn.
must be hard making so much money during a recession! give it a couple more years and we will be having the same mass protests the amount of **** we put up with in this country is a joke the goverment doesnt give a crap about us that is more than obvious.

if i was in a position where i could emigrate i would do it in a heartbeat.

all these big companies that claim to be struggling are speaking crap like tescos who increased there profits rather nicely! were all in it together my ass!

our goverment nolonger serves the people they serve the big companies

Where does it end, they keep jacking up the prices of things we "have" to buy, why not just put it up 50% and have done with it :(

Speculation on certain commodities should be outlawed, how much of these rises are real and how much is just speculation.

About 25% so i have read. Same with food as well. It's a joke. A very cruel one.

There are so many things in this country that border on the mad. Eventually we will realise that you cannot ask someone to be "honest" in business.

Lets let the banks regulate themselves, lets have a privatised public transport system and lets let energy companies do what they like as long as they tell their customers.

Companies have only one duty of care and that is to their shareholders. Some things should not be run for profit and others should be heavily monitored to avoid this sort of thing.

Raymond Jack, Scottish Power's UK retail director, said: "We understand times are difficult for many people, and we have done what we can to absorb these additional costs for as long as possible to minimise the impact on our customers."

Yeh whatever..

I just don't know how people will cope, I mean, I use gas as little as humanly possible as it is - I have a central heating embargo that runs from March to October and I still struggle .. :( ..I'll be taking cold showers during summer at this rate...

more old people will die this winter no one cares aslong as the goverment gets there cut in the form of taxes, it was on skynews website a few days ago how old people spend less on food when the winter comes so they can afford to spend more keeping their homes warm ...

With everything else going up, well other than our wages :( (5 years and counting had a 3% pay rise and thats all) I think it might be a decent Idea to fix but just couldnt work out how these tariff's would save me money
You need to be careful what "Fixed" deal you go with as well, because in the small print you'll find they can raise the prices if the cost of supply to them goes up as well.

Looks like we'll have to shop around then, but a 19% rise on gas (sure to be copied by all) will be painful.

I'm sure all the large Natural Gas and Oil companies will be posting record profits as well.....
