joke made by my examinations officer today....

Its not racist, there is no malicious intent in what she said. If someone can explain to me how this is related to a dislike of chinese people then I am all ears

Oh and @play, you deserve to be banned for that thread about cheryl cole, then you deserve permabanning for pointing people back at it again. One of the least funny things I have seen in all my years.

You Need to chill.

ROTFLMAO

I'm Chinese and so not offended, kudos for the funny

I think she would only get done if it was meant to be offensive or for one of them to find it offensive and reported it but if they laughed too then there isn't a problem

It's just a bit stupid really... It suggests that a person's sole point of contact with Chinese culture is ordering a takeaway, which suggest's a measure of ignorance at best and downright stubbornness to take on another culture at worst.

I'd say more ignorant considering she didn't even realise what she said.

Like I said earlier, if she is that age she has heard that joke a lot of times on the TV in the past but probably knew she had done wrong as soon as she said it so decided to act dumb.

(see what I did there?)

My only significant contact with Chinese people has been from the chinky, be it local or china town.
That isn't ignorance or stubbornness, that's life.

I can't say that I have ever needed to read lots of far eastern words in a list on anything other than a Chinese menu or a judo terms/moves list.

Did she say the word "penalised" at any point?

I couldn't help laughing my arse off when our officer used to say that at the start of every GCSE exam.

Some folk really need to lighten up and accept not everyone is as perfect as them. Accept that she is from an era where comments like that were the norm. Sure, it was a mistimed, ill informed comment but clearly, there was no malice in it. On a plus side she inadvertently put all of the students at ease during a very tense situation, no doubt increasing their chances of a good mark!

My Granddad, God rest his soul, was as racist as they come. He meant no harm by it, didn't realise he was doing it but it was the accepted norm and despite trying to explain many times that it was no longer acceptable in modern society he would often blurt out some language that some people would deem 'uncomfortable'. He eventually got it so when an Asian doctor attended him on his death bed we were very proud when he refrained from having a 'Prince Phillip moment'.

I'm not condoning the examiners behaviour but we have to accept that racism, especially when committed by those from a totally different era, will not disappear overnight. Time, patience and an iota of understanding works better than constant chastisement by the Peter perfects of this world.

No, 'chinky' is ignorance.

So you agree that the examiners comment is not ignorance?

Pardon? I think she is ignorant of the fact that what she said could be seen as offensive. Whereas your 'chinky' comment is unquestionablly offensive.

Actually, haven't we had this debate before and you banged on about how everyone round your way used the term and meant no malice and blah blah blah "I'm not a racist but ..."?

Then again, if that wasn't you and was one of our other bigots then I take that second part back.

Problem is, one of these Chinese students may fail the exam and then launch an appeal on the basis that they were (allegedly) offended right before their exam started and that it threw them off a bit.

But don't you see that is closed minded ?

That may be your only source of contact to chinese people, but to assume that's all they do implies a prejudice without you doing it on purpose. That is ignorance.

Obviously you are bright enough to know that there are more chinese people than those selling you take away. There are a billion on the other side of the world that don't, just because you never come across them in your life, it doesn't mean you can't acknowledge it.

Why is it closed minded? A comical reference to a list of chinese words, that's all it is.
If it was a comedian I doubt there would be a care in the world by anyone.

Nobody is assuming all chinese people work in a chinese restaurant.
