*Travel Advice - Help with the Ladyboys*

i would never go to thailand after reading about the stuff the goverment hides from you..

be very careful and do not take any risks! the natives do not like tourists lol.

read up on "gangs tourists thailand" via google

enjoy your stay!

Thanks for the concern and I will genuinly read the articles, however I must add that if you live your life in fear of "what could happen" you would never get to experience anything.

There are gangs/crime/drugs and issues in places ALL over the world, does this mean you are not willing to visit anywhere?

2007 report. Isolated incident. So you'd never go to somewhere just because there have been some incidents in the past. People get mugged, beaten up, killed everywhere in the world. Thailand is a beautiful country. For people who respect their laws, their lifestyle then Thailand is as safe as any other country and the country you live in.

Sadly it's the same in every tourist destination, some ruin it for the most.

lol, you can find bad stories about anywhere.... the truth is that you would have to be very unlucky to run in to trouble in any country that you go to

even here in london with all these stabbings

Good morning you lovely GD bunch!

Now I know some of you are very well travelled so I am after a little bit of advice.

My partner and I have booked our holiday to Thailand. We are going this August for two weeks. This is a little bit different from our past holidays (Japan and Florida) but I am looking forward to it just as much.

The flights have been paid for (Qutar airlines) the hotels for both Bangkok and Phuket have been booked and paid for (Phuket: Boomerang villas and Bangkok: Legacy Suites) And all our internal flights etc have also been sorted and paid for, and all of this done before we leave (the wonders of having an organised fiancée :) )

Now the only thing I am really after is some advice on costs and average spending money to take. I know a lot of this depends on the individual so I will try and give you a breakdown of our past holidays and expectations.

Historically I have always taken over £1000 spending money each time we have been away (thats £1000 for each of us ie: £2000 or more in total). The reason for this was to buy as much shopping and soveneers as possible and because the exchange rate was very favourable to the £ on both occasions spending money was never really an issue.

We eat out nearly every day for all meals, went shopping (a lot) and never really had to keep an eye on the money. We are not massive drinkers, only occasionally having a few drinks in nice bars etc, and clubbing is never something that’s interested either of us. However things like beach parties, street parties with acts/markets etc is something we both enjoy.

When away we tend to break down our total money into “daily limits” and each day (regardless if we had money left over from previous days) we take another “daily limit” out with us.

Now I have read on various travel boards that Thailand is cheap. (Cheap food, cheap day excursions, cheap for pretty much everything.) So I was thinking of taking about £500-£600 spending money for myself, and my partner will take about the same. Will this be enough for 2 weeks? remembering that all our accomidation and internal flights etc are already paid for. Am I planning on taking too little? Or too much?

Any other general advice would be appreciated. Where to go? What to avoid? Good travel insurance companies (this is the only thing left i need to book)

Thanks in advance!

worse 'i'm going on an expensive Thai holiday thread ever'

not like I'm in anyway Jealous ;)

I was on my own for most of my trips to Thailand and never saw any trouble. Had the scam artists try a few things on me, first time I went I did get suckered in to a few, then 2nd and 3rd trips knew not to worry about them.

Phuket does not mean Patong and I spent a week in Patong on my own, got no trouble at all.

The only fight I ever seen in Thailand was at the Full Moon Party and that was between thai and thai.

Sounds like a lot missing from that story - I only skimmed the follow up info but it seems there was a bit more to it than they happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Friend of mine had a couple of instances where someone would get all "buudy buddy" with them, seem really friendly at first, talk them into visiting a local club, but then it turns a bit more nasty and they were hindered from leaving until they'd spent a certain amount on drinks - he didn't feel overly threatened but they weren't messing around either.

people are completely over worrying about the worst case scenarios

you have to remember that every where you go in the world there will be some scam artists trying to get some of your money

just need to use common sense and not put yourself in to stupid situations,

ive been many many times and never had any trouble

ive been to see a ping pong show where they try to charge you more than was advertised, sure but hardly life threatening

Expensive? Hardly. 'Budget' more like. He's flying with a cheapo airline and hoping to do two weeks on £600.

My last three visits cost £3000 each (per person).

I dont know why, but this post slightly offends me :o

Not everyone has £3000 to blow on lady boys, So I will let it slide to a point although i Must admit I didn’t realise Qutar where considered a budget airline? I suppose it might not be first choice for the "travel elite" ...

I suppose everyone’s perceptions of cheap vs expensive are different.

I certainly wouldn’t consider what I’ve spend so far on flights hotels and internal flights etc "budget" though.

edit: Qatar not Qutar

Its not really worst case scenario - theres many common scams that happen all the time to tourists in popular tourist spots and some countries tend to be a little more prone to it than others.

i agree, but all im saying is keep it in proportion.

if you read about the worst things happening in any city, you wouldnt want to go there

But this is mainly down to common travel knowledge and common sense. Most people can usually sense these sorts’ things a mile away, and I would like to think I would never get suckered into anything like this.

However I also understand how easy it can be to be taken for a ride when being abroad, A lot of my friends have suffered as a result of lack of local knowledge.

I appreciate all advice given so far so thanks guys :)

Yeah true, my sister for instance will fall for the same scam time and time again, whereas I generally see them coming a mile off and it takes something a bit more sophisticated to fool me - generally they are just trying it on and a little common sense means you won't be in any real danger (getting physical with tourists isn't good for repeat "business").

One thing I usually do when in these parts - carry 2 wallets on me - one a little more secure and less used with more important stuff in it and a 2nd one with ready cash/change and less important stuff in that I use more - if it does get a little threatening _most_ of the time waving it at them and saying "here this is all the money I have" will work - _usually_ they just want something and then dissapear as quickly as possible (not a situation that happens too often tho).
