Hi,

I definitely think its time for a new pc and was wondering if anyone in the know would mind checking the following build out. It's been a few years since i built a pc and I haven't kept up to pace with what's what so would appreciate any thoughts or improvement :) Am looking at a 1k budget but its slightly flexible if a few more notes get me a much better rig :)

Thanks

Bundle is a bit expensive?

And if you add more RAM to the bundle then the overclock is not guaranteed anymore,

Note - Please note that adding in additional memory to the spare slots will require new BIOS settings and the maximum clock speed attainable may be significantly reduced.

Your also adding a 8GB RAM kit to a 4GB RAM kit, try matching it better.

The WD Black drive is no faster than this - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-082-SA&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=1279

Get this graphics card instead:

Game for £5 and higher clock speeds IIRC

Can you stretch a bit to this case?

It's bigger which can benefit you for later upgrades

Personally, instead of the bundle, I would buy the parts separately and have a go at over clocking myself ;) It' a good project to do and gives you more experience

EDIT: and also what stulid said ;)

Ditch the bundle and the HDD.

Buy a 2500K, MSI P67A-GD65 with free cooler, 8GB of RAM and a Samsung F3 1TB drive.

The money you've saved will nearly buy another 6950 for Crossfire or pay for an SSD.

I don't usually have anything to add to spec me threads as the OP is usually fiited out by Stulid before i've even started looking at current prices...

But if i did - i would do the above - but i would also ditch the case for a better quality one as you're doing a quality build - such as Lian Li or a Silverstone.

Thanks for the input! will look into the 2500k idea :) Sorry i should have explained, was going to resell the 4gb you get in the bundle and stick with the 2x4gb sticks as it should still be ok with the over clock then. The case is a bit of a problem as well, my pc desk only has room for a case which is 440mm at absolute max :(

I went with the bundle as it would save attaching the cooler and messing about with the thermal paste. Have only done it once before and wasn't that confident with the whole too much/little paste. I will look into it a bit more though as its a good idea to save a bit of money for other part of the builds :)

You will still have to attach the cooler yourself, it gets shipped unattached to stop damage to the CPU and Socket.

It's scarier than it actually is the first time - a single rice/pea sized blob, secure heatick and you're away...

Plenty of youtube guides if you need them.

Each one of us here has had to take the first big step. As long as you don't do something stupid like my mate did (dropped screwdriver on CPU!) then you will be fine. Well always be here to help you should you need it. :)

Remember the days when you needed to use a flat blade to attach a cooler by forcing the clip over the lug:eek: and it could slip out onto the PCB:eek:

Interesting information with the adding the cooler yourself with the bundle (but it makes sense) it defeats the purpose of me going with the bundle though so think i will attempt to do it myself! Never thought to check youtube out for thermal compound videos but found a fair few already :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EyXLu1Ms-q4&feature=related made me wonder what thermal compound/method do people recommend at the moment?

The current build looks like this, i think it's just thermal paste and a case now then i need?

Thank you all again though, you really have been such a big help :)

I'm still living them Stulid! Hate removing the AMD stock heatsinks, I swear the day will come when I fatally stab the mobo hooking or unhooking the metal hook/clip.

I'm not trying to scare the OP. It's not difficult, you've already had good suggestions for applying the paste. Patience is the key and do things gingerly. One day you'll wonder what the fuss was ;)

*EDIT* Just seen your spec! That RAM has some serious looking heatspreaders on it, will the supplied cooler clear the RAM? I'd be surprised if the heatsink didn't come with atleast enough paste for one application.

I know what you mean - i think i still have the indentation marks on my thumb.

My first build was 17 years ago - everything was scary as there wasn't any means of getting any extra help (what were forums?).

All i had was little slips of paper that came with the parts (if there were any at all) that had more chinese than english on them for instructional advice.

I think i spent the first 2 hours in bewilderment wondering what the hell possessed me to build a PC from scratch with only random magazine cuttings for advice...

Oh! Surprised no one has mentioned already. Swap your optical drive for a Sata one. No one likes big IDE cables floating around their cases anymore. I'm not even sure if your board has an IDE slot. There becoming obsolete now.
