Is Nokia on the way out?

My last and only Nokia was 11 years ago and I have never had another, the N8 had me tempted with its camera and video but after messing on one I soon went off that idea.

I have a Nokia, and I'd get another - but at the moment there's a period of transition, they have to build a model with Microsoft - figure out what's wrong with it - then build another. That's probably when I'll buy my next phone.

I have a mate who works for CPW and reckons you can't give Nokias away at the moment, and the company memos are keeping their distance from them to the point of probably NOT stocking any new models at all...worst case scenario that Nokia in the UK will be dead in 6 months...

Nokia said recently that they'll have a WP7 phone out by the end of the year.

Even with retraining their staff, that goal isn't too unrealistic. The hardware and hardware adaptation is standard across all WP7 devices. All Nokia needs to do is add their services on top.

Should be, but they haven't hit a release date target in years...it's not that I don't want to see Nokia do well, I just fear that they won't

I'd be surprised if nooks are selling many smartphones right now, they've been going downhill since the n96....

I'm sure they sell dumb phones by the truckload however...

That is a just an estimate so we'll have to wait and see.

At the moment from my memory Nokia sells more phones (all phones) worldwide than its next 4 competitors combined.

Incidentally, with Apple now paying royalties to Nokia, they have an interest in shifting more Iphones too.

Completely wrong...Nokia DID shift 108 million phones in the 1st quarter, but Samsung shipped 64 million, LG shipped 27 million and RIM and Sony Ericsson shipped just over 10 million each. With Nokia forecasting a decline of 25% in shipments, and Samsung currently growing at 350% they will be overtaken later this year in total shipments. Those figures aren't the problem however, they are much less profitable than Samsung at the moment, in every segment. They are also selling at quite a lower ASP too.

Samsung is not growing at 350%. More like 9%. You're confusing smartphone and overall phone numbers.

Sorry I did get smartphone v overall mixed up. Just checked though, and last month Samsung increased sales by 25% in dumbphones, nearly all at Nokia's expense. Last month was the first time in something like 16 years that Nokia did not have a phone in the top ten selling list...

So the consensus is, they are sliding, but still have a long way to go before they are a much of a bit part player as someone like SonyErricsson.

Though really volume is nothing. It's all about profitability for the shareholders.

Yup, I'd agree it's the profit margins...but they're being hammered there too. Carriers appear to be dropping them for the first time in history and retailers like CPW don't appear to be buying Nokia in large numbers if at all. My worry is that they will slide so far they become takeover targets. PS if SE are bit players that makes Apple bit players too. SE shipped twice as many phones as Apple last quarter, but Apple made 3 times as much profit. Consensus is that Apple are really milking the punters dry.

Wonder if i'll be able to get an N8 for cheap then.

It will be really interesting to see what they do when the new Nokia WP7 phone comes out. It's really got to be backed up by a massive, unprecedented (in the mobile market) advertising campaign. The only company i've really seen advertise their phone everywhere is Apple. The last Nokia ads i saw were for the N82 or 86 something like that.
