says Carmack.

Really? or has he just had some sort of weird dream?

article here

ok so even if it has dx11 etc, it cant possibly be 10 times as powerful as current gens? surely? just look at the power of pcs now whilst their much more powerful than current consoles there not exactly 10 times more powerful....

according to reports development of games is well underway with an expected announcement from MS next year with a launch at 2013 and given that the hardware must have been locked down already.

According to Moores Law it would only take 6 years for an 8 fold increase in the number of transistors on the chips.
So it's not an unreasonable statement to make, but weather the power can be harnessed is another matter.

I do think MS will anounce the Nextbox at 2012 E3 with a 2013 release.

Royally get one over on Nintendo, with the Wii U coming out then BANG the all new next generation will come out and Nintendo will look shameful.

Sounds plausible - MS will want to get to market before sony and the 360's lifecycle seems to be coming to an end, better start saving those pennies now! lol

Well mobile devices get up to x2 to x8 more GPU power per year and are predicted to be a x10 increase next year over this gen. So x10 increase over when the last consoles came out might be too low if anything.

Well AMD are releasing their chips next year which will be doing 400 and 500 gigaflops of data, so no, I don't think it's far fetched at all.

Some mobile chips are producing graphics comparable (equal?) to desktop's and console's now (although in lower resolutions). The next gen must be soon.

I also expect double the price too but if its worth it then we wont mind. This is reason why i see the WiiU being a waste for Nintendo as if Sony/MS annouce a new consol next year E3. Nintendo tyring to get the more hard core gamer market will be pointless as most will wait for the next xbox or playstation

AMD 6970/NV GTX580 are about 8 times faster than the Xbox GPU. So a slightly beefed up 6970 on 28nm should come in at ~100watt TDP and give 10 times the current gen's performance. If the next gen Xbox is released next year that will be the performance, give or take 20%.

Consoles falldown in a few areas. They lack the ability to have decent AA without performance hit, draw distance is a problem and load speeds, and the sizes of textures loaded is a sore area too. Resolutions at actual 1080p across all games would be great too.

For those things, the console doesnt need to be 10x or 8x faster. So anything over 2x-4x faster is a bonus.

but then as always, it depends on what developers decided to do with whats available. They may take all the raw processing power, give us a visual orgasm, but it could end up limited to 720p due to the amount thats going on.

PS2 was 10x as powerful as PS1, PS3 was 10x as powerful as PS2, and according to Moore's Law it makes perfect sense.

It's more unlikely not to be the case. This generation doesn't feel like a big jump in graphics simply because developers had to accommodate a massive bump up in resolution.
