Why does Steam take sooooo long to start up?

Its your pc/internet.

When on my gfs very poor computer with equally poor internet, it would take minutes. My steam here starts up in a few seconds.

Then it can't be working as advertised if its just suddenly happened.

What can't be working as advertised? My PC? Of course it is!

Steam being slow - Been like it for as long as I can recall... It's just hit me today how daft it was that it took so long...

So why isn't it taking just a couple of secs then!?

The connecting to Steam message comes up in a couple of seconds. But then to get fully into Steam takes nearly another minute, with some reasonable CPU usage going on !

(Obviously I don't load Steam at boot up, and instead click an icon to load it up if/when I need it)

*exits Steam*

*clicks Steam*

Took roughly 30 seconds to come on with a fair few windows and stuff open. And as anyone whose played SupCom2 with me will tell you, this PC isn't exactly speedy.

Could just be its taking it too long to connect to Steam so if you can monitor net activity you could at least rule that out.

(ok a few seconds was an underestimate but i generally only run it on startup anyway)

I just timed it. Took exactly 6 seconds from clicking the steam button to being on my library page...and it loaded an advert for Dungeon Siege too. On a WD Caviar Black 1TB, 20M Virgin Media connection and FF running in the background streaming an iplayer program???
There must be something wrong with your client or internet.

If I do that, it takes a few (5-10) seconds.. It's just the first run of Steam that takes a minute!

All the time it's loading (for the first time) the steam.exe is using 20-30% CPU for example! So it's doing a lot for that minute!
