Manual v Auto

Erm, welcome to 1991, you can find the NSX and the Prelude over there >

Erm, perhaps I should have, erm, clarified, and erm , stated that, erm, I meant that, erm , if they only made solely an auto. Erm.

Better get burning then as the NSX was available as an Auto...

Might give it a shot, the local dealership were always a bunch of pretentious binheads who didn't know anything about the cars they sold anyway.

These days of course the gap in fuel consumption between auto and manual is far far smaller, in some cases autos are more economical, but the aversion to Autoboxes remains deeply rooted in society. To most people the concept of an auto is just alien - whereas in the US the first car they ever drive will be auto.
This is what I was getting at with my post, Fox has done a much better job of wording it though.

When the Octavia goes it will most likely be replaced with something which will be 100% tool rather than the current 50% tool 50% toy split. If whatever I decide on has equal fuel economy in both auto and manual (or as near as makes no difference) and the gearbox isn't dire then it will be the auto that I'll be after.

I'd love a DSG something or other but not sure my budget will stretch.

But this is the thing us Auto lovers can't get, 95% of people with a manual box in their car don't go hooning in the vaguest sense of the word, but insist that they need a manual. Why?

Involvement and complete control over the operation. I'm talking about going for a hoon here and not necessarily sitting in traffic or on the motorway.

Going for a hoon I can understand, I get that. But the poster above me said that changing gear is an enjoyable part of driving :p

Perhaps because, for him, it is?

And if you read before you post you will see I was asking the poster what was enjoyable about it. No need for you to be confused fella, no need to try and find fault with things.

Since petrol is so cheap, and insurance is almost nothing, and they're practically giving away cars, i've decided that I need 3 of them
1. Electric car for my 4odd mile daily commute. (i'm not walking/biking in the rain)
2. Big comfy auto with full leather, all the toys, probably some kind of 6 pot diesel.
3. B road white knuckle make you grin with every gear change.

So it's all about what you need the car for, which brings me back to my original point, do you want to do a 60 mile commute in traffic with a manual? I sure as hell wouldn't. I gave up a better paid job to get away from a 2+ hour 75 mile commute daily, and I bet traffic up here is nothing compared with where the op intends to use it.

I've never owned an automatic, only test driven them/had them as the odd lease car but I would happily have one if it was the same price as a manual. I cant say it would bother me one way or the other!

After having my first automatic last september, I hope I never have to go back to a manual again!

I'm not one for going out for a "hoon" as people like to put it. When I'm in the car I want a nice smooth and comfortable ride with minimal effort. They are also great in traffic, which most of the roads I end up on are start/stop all the time.

A proper dual clutch automatic/DSG/DCTSTST or whatever the abbreviations for them these days are win. A traditional torque converting automatic with manual intervention via paddles is still an automatic and nothing like driving a manual at all.

100% agree, the DSG VW/Audi box is a joy to drive in manual or auto
