Well, I'm planning on going to the cinema tomorrow. I've heard of IMAX, I believe it was used in Avatar which of course as everyone knows... looks amazing!

I don't really understand it all, or rather haven't bothered to read wikipedia yet... seems rather long and confusing.

Anyway... Is it worth going to an imax cinema? Is it really much better than an ordinary one?

If anyone could sum it up in a sentence or two that would be grand :D

All I can understand is that an Imax cinema is suppose to fill your entire vision creating the illusion of 3D. And this can work, saw a "film" in Dynamic Earth, projected onto the inside dome, so looking up fulled the entire vision, something things appeared 3d, but weirdly made me feel sick while normal3d cinema doesn't.

As long as you get the full screen and all the technology then yes I would certainly recommend going.

Unfortunately the IMAX in Cardiff doesn't have a full size screen.

Went to the one in Wimbledon. It was okay.

Then I went to the BFI IMAX in Waterloo. AMAZING!!! the screen was just massive.

Depends what type of IMAX.

Proper IMAX is supposed to be really good.

Retro-fitted IMAX is a bit sub-par in terms of picture quality. Odeon in Norwich has a 'new' IMAX screen which is basically just a slightly bigger screen with different projectors/sound system. The sound system was very good, but you could see the individual pixels on the screen very easily - quite poor resolution compared to 'proper' IMAX.

Been to the Waterloo Imasx to see Star Trek and loved it both the film and the cinema itself. The other boost was that at £15 a ticket you don't get muppets in there chatting away making me want to mutilate them.

Ahhh... I had it all planned, your putting me off now. I'm quite geeky that way, I like to make sure things are optimal... if it's sub par I would rather just see a normal movie.

How would I go about finding out if it's "Proper" and what is the exact definition of proper?

Cheers.

Avatar at Wimbledon and Tron at Waterloo. The best 3D effect in tron was the 3D ad before the movie. Disappointed.

Avatar was epic though.

I went to an IMAX years ago, when they were first starting to do all the 3D malarkey. It was manageable for the short 45 minute screening but it did cause some discomfort due to the odd viewing angle.
I'd hope they've improved it since then.

For years I heard this word IMAX, and it sounded like something I needed to try out, I love going to the cinema I go every month and see all the best films at VUE cinema in leeds, but when avatar came out my friends said why dont we go to IMAX to see it, so we did and it didnt impress me at all, the screen that I was at seemed a bit taller then a normal screen but the quality didnt seem as good and the picture seemed stretched and the 3D didnt work properly.

After I saw avatar again at VUE cinema, huge screen, perfect quality, and the 3D worked flawlessly.

Also to top it off they didnt sell any drinks or popcorn when I went so was a bad experience for me at the IMAX in bradford lol.

After that experience I'll never go again.

The Imax at the printworks in manchester is amazing, the screen is huge and the sound system is damn impressive

*edit* the screen is 23 metres wide x 29 metres high
