Hmm, it occurred to me that I'm averaging about £13 a month with BT phone unlimited evenings and weekend calls, and looking at my online phone usage recently, it's mostly to my mum at times when it's not weekend or evening, or it's to 0844, 0845 or 0871 numbers. I can do all those numbers for free on my mobile with my new tariff which starts tomorrow. Hardly anyone calls me on the landline these days, it's mostly the mobile. I always thought it's good to keep the landline as a safe backup, but I think it's a waste of money now. In these days of cellphones, I wonder how many others bother to keep their landlines going. To get rid or not to get rid? Any of you done it?

Well I have a landline, as it was cheaper to get all 3 with virgin, that just getting tv+Internet.

However there isn't anything plugged in. I don't see the point, even when i was on adsl there wasnt a phone plugged in. Most people have mobile contracts with more mins than they can use.

Most people have their broadband delivered over the landline so I think they'll be staying for a while.
Unfortunately this. Otherwise I'd have shot of the landline instantly.

Don't Sky boxes also rely on being hooked to the phone line? Or is that just for the interactive services?

I think they're supposed to remain hooked up. Not had Sky for Oberon a decade so I'm not sure how it stands.

I have my broadband delivered by cable and to be honest I've still got and will keep a landline.

I really like Reaper's idea of buying a PAYG mobile in the event of me misplacing, or even completely losing my main mobile phone. I'd still have all my contacts from outlook/google contacts. I'm also on virgin media cable, so don't need landline for ADSL.

Don't even need to buy a PAYG phone these days. O2 hand out free sim cards like confetti, and you must have an old phone laying around somewhere?

I get caught on conference calls for hours because of work, and I don't want to have to worry about a mobile battery or keeping it pressed to my ear or anything. Landline will remain. :)

Sure, I have 3 phones at the moment, two are in the drawer. You're right, I wouldn't need another phone. You say O2 are handing out free sim cards, but can I not just go and pick up a PAYG sim card from any shop/supermarket and top it up, or do you mean that normally you have to buy a phone and sim card together?

Use my landline sometimes, get free calls to Sky should I ever need to phone so can be handy for that, and I use it for non geo numbers if i can't find another on saynoto0870.

Also, and this is very important to remember.
Your landline (with a bog standard corded phone) will typically keep working for a number of hours during a powercut (possibly days), certainly for BT lines as they are powered from the Exchange where there is usually a decent UPS in place.

Mobile phones on the other hand rely on base stations that often have little or no power backup.

Not to mention the likes of 0800 numbers often aren't free on mobiles, and is much easier for the police to track if you need to call them in an emergency at home even if you don't complete the call fully).

Damn, I'm trying to save money and now you've gone and changed my mind again.:( You make some very good points. I didn't consider powercuts or police tracking.

But as far as 0800 numbers go, my new Flex 35 T-Mobile plan will include most premium rate numbers like 0845, 0844 in the allowance @40p pm. The allowance is 15 hours. I rarely ever use up my current 5 hour allowance.

{snip}.

Exactly the same boat.

However, we got quite a good number (lots of 8's in it) so are going to use it as a business line. (Other half is self employed)

I'm in a very similar position to you. When our BT landline contract is due to be renewed we will be cancelling it.
