who buys £500 graphic cards?

Why do I need to have a 2560 monitor when there are many benchmarks out there?

Because benchmark's can only show some of the story, there is so much they miss out & many times give the wrong impression.

I have been on 2560x1600 since 2006 & know first hand that there figures can be out at a given settings because they did not post all of them & merely generalised & then you reach a point in a game & the performance plummets way below what they claim because they didn't play that section or had a particular in game setting lowered which they didn't mention.

Sure performance is going to drop below the average framerate at some point. I just think that it's overkill to pay £500 for that.

Each too there own, but then you would not have a 2560x1600 for gaming in the first place either for that matter.

£500 isn't that much when you consider how much other hobbies can cost. You can always sell your old card to pay towards the new one too.

Well, some other hobbies cost more, but more 'Normal' Hobbies cost a lot less - I play tennis for £30 a month with the occasional £50 racket and could do it a lot cheaper by using public tennis courts making the only cost the aforementioned rackets

if its an asus mars II then i would consider paying that much if i had the money lying around. after a few seconds i would dismiss the idea as stupid though because my GTX460 maxes out everything i have with very little problems

yeah, until next week when your card is worth half as much as there is a new king on the GFX block :p

Just ordered a pair of 3Gb 580's :P and no i am not filthy rich or have a sad life and i do still spend plenty of money on beer :P

I'm all for buying the best that one can afford, within financial reason of course :). Why? Because it will likely mean you won't have to upgrade so often to maintain a decent level of performance which in the long run may mean you actually end up spending less,or at least not that much more than someone who spends less to begin with but then needs to upgrade often.

If you upgrade when the current card begins to struggle and go for the very best card -1 that's probably quite financially economical in the long run. So at the moment that would be 580 of some description (-1 from 590). However it's difficult to do this though because for some it would be so tempting to buy the next new card. Bit like someone who can afford to buy a brand new M3....are they tempted to buy the next model M3 when it comes out? Bet they are!

who buys £500 graphic cards and why?
I payed about £660 for my two GPU cards...

The reason being is that i much play games on my PC and like to know that i can throw all the graphic options to max without having to worry if my PC is powerful enough to run the games or not....

Even if I had the cash I don't think I'd spend £500. Purely because cards come and go so quickly, what's top of the range today, next year is ancient.

If I was on triple screens that would be a different matter though.

what is the cheapest card that will max out most games?

i found a 6870 black edition for £130, i might buy it

That's a decent price mate and it would max most games no problem at 1920x1080. Excluding the obvious games like Crysis and Metro perhaps. BUY IT :)

But that's goes for all the range not just the top end & unless the 6870 is equal or better than a 5850 i would doubt that.

So you will not buy the top of the range because your scared of not having the top of the range for long so you end up living with the very thing your afraid of and that is having a card that is not top of the range.
