No heatsink?

Why have no AM3 specs been suggested?

I think £500 is the point where you switch between CPU companies. Assuming it's a gaming PC, at £500 or above you should probably go SB and get an i5 2500k, below it then get the x4 955 or the GPU will suffer. As the OP already has a GPU and a £500 budget, he can afford to go with a 2500k which is better than anything AMD offer and therefore the best option.

argh!
My budget is about £500 too, and I have been swaying towards AMD just because I thought it would give me more bang for buck, and more money to spend on other bits (memory, graphics and psu)

I see you have been posting in various sub forums for each different part, these are normally more beneficial when asking about a certain upgrade however for a full system, just posting a spec me thread in General Hardware is the best bet. At fear of thread hijacking I would suggest doing so. Make sure you make it clear your budget, what you need (Monitor? OS? Mouse? Keyboard?), what your main uses will be and any other specifics that you may need? e.g. A wireless keyboard over a wired one etc.
Then either me or any of the other members of the forum can help (WIll most likely be Stulid, he's pretty good :p)
