Also, if you can - stick a scaffolding pole/extender bar of some sort over the spanner, to increase leverage. Might work.

Do you know the names of any of the trails he's riding there? Some parts look ace especially the steep bits with the reservoir in the background!
Have you tried this:
Crank arm pointing down/slightly forwards.
Spanner (in red, if you cant tell from my awesome drawing) pointing back at almost the same angle as the crank arm.
