i just wanna load and play a game, i don't like steam that much, but needs must, i hate the update news thing and can't seem to turn it off, does anyone no a way?

Just turn off steam updates/news in settings, make sure the folder isn't read-only :)

The setting is a check box called "notify me of*" iirc

Yea and you would never of thought that it could be found in the STEAM SETTINGS. (sarcasm :o)

Given that it hasn't annoyed him before why would he have bothered to go and look for it or even think about where he could turn it off?

I like the use of the word spam here... like it does it constantly... not after you close a game and thats about it.

was no that clear, that it would stop the news from popping up, i did look at the settings, but was looking for something a little obvious like "don't pop up crappy add for a game you don't want"

Its a pop-up for new games/preorders, 'last chance' preorders and discount events and afaik it only tends to pop-up after you finish a game if theres something new to say.
Stop bitching about it like it throwing up adverts every 5 minutes in the background along the lines of 'we thought you might like this game!'.

Ah, I remember when every time Steam News popped up it was a really exciting occasion where Gabe or someone personally wrote about the development of a game. Now it's just adverts and adverts.

I don't mind it though. Some adverts are alright to know.

To be honest, I find it quite annoying too. It's just an extra window to have to close each time I start steam up or exit a game.

Annoyingly, about 1 time in 20 I actually find the thing it's advertising interesting :/

I get it like once a day, the first time I exit a game or restart Steam.

Dead handy for deals, new releases, pre-load info etc. Saves having to constantly scout the store. I like it.

Each to their own though. It's not hard to turn off if your not interested, so I'm amazed by how much QQ there is over it.

I wouldn't mind it if there was ever anything of interest on it... I don't want BLOPS for £30, nor DNF. Not that it has ever induced rage either

I guess for me the annoyance factor is due to being taken back to the heady days of youth, running netscape or IE on my college computers and fully expecting about 3-4 popup windows per website.

So few and far between that they couldn't possibly annoy me. Albeit they scarcely ever show me something I'm interested in, but I keep 'em on anyway as said.

shut up fool. it comes up each and every time i load steam... unlike you don't want to be sold or shown adds for things. i have no interest. i use steam for BFBC2 & L4D2, only games i have installed.

it was a fair qestion, and im glad its all turned off. each to there own

I'm the fool? Did you even look in options before coming here to moan about it in such a way anyone would think it was popping up every 5 minutes trying to sell you a new game.
