TF2 gone free to play

Installed it, played it, wont play it again.

What a truly awful game. A console FPS would feel more responsive and faster.

As a long term veteran of TF and TFC, I knew TF2 was a joke as I tried it when it first came out, but some years down the line it's far, far worse.

It's well polished visually in every department and for that Valve deserve a lot of credit, but in terms of actual game play, map design, weapon design, balance and authenticity it's diabolical!

Sure you're playing the same game as everyone else? Or is this just the standard rant from a tf/tfc player who wanted the gameplay in tf2 to be identical to the older games so you had an advantage on day 1?

lul wut? In the way they are not linked to real-world counterparts?

I must admit that I really wanted TF2 to be more like TFC. I bought it a couple of weeks after release and to this day have maybe clocked 2.5 hours on it.

Having not played it at all since they began the unlocks/hats/in-game store madness I just find it an insufferable experience now as I have next to nothing unlocked and just get gibbed every 5 seconds. :(

We have to have confidence in Valve, so far they have support TF2 right from release day and have always tried to keep the game as current as possible and give the players what we wanted. (Are you listening EA!)

They have obviously got figures of some player base decline and want to try and relaunch the game if you like.
The good news is this is not just a 'let it go F2P and die' type statement, they have a model that they hope will get TF2 a longer life.
I think Subbing to a clan/hosted server will now become more important tbh, but that is not a bad thing i suppose.

I am optimistic, and have faith in what Valve are trying to do - so will reserve any negative comments until they are factual rather then speculative.

Didn't you feel the same way going from TF to TFC though? All of the TF vets I played with complained that TF had been dumbed down, had terrible level design and lacked balance.

It's a different game. Deal with it.

LOL YEAH!

As soon as there was an optional place to buy items that I obtained through crafting/achievements/random drops - I uninstalled. LOL

It seems no matter what games developers do, there is always people who are going to complain, even when it's free. The game is as good now as its always been. Non of the added weapons or hats give anyone any more of an advantage than the vanilla weapons. They just give you the choice to play some classes in different ways. Whenever I play I still use the original weapons. If me and my mate play our usual medic/heavy combo we normally end up near the top of the score board playing with the original weapons.

I've never played TF2, but have had it installed for AAAAAGES since I got the Orange Box way back when...

Is it worth playing now, as a new player with no experience/unlocks etc?

How long do you think for a reasonable FPS gamer with at least half a team-brain to get up to speed where it's fun instead of punishing?

ATM I'm still playing BFBC2, and the ability to make a big difference to your team is a large part of that game, but starting a new one from scratch is a bit daunting.

I gave up on this game when they started offering items to buy in the store

No one is MAKING you buy anything from the store. And at least Valve release all the new maps for free! If you needed the store weapons to play, I would accept your argument as being valid. But since you can wait for weapon drops, or craft weapons, AND still play with stock weapons with no disadvantage, I don't really see the complaint against the store. It's a pretty pathetic excuse to be honest.

There's bots and training to get you up to speed on the basics. Then it's just a matter of choosing a class you like and learning the maps as you play.

The basic weapons are generally quite useful and weapon drops happen at a regular interval.

It's designed as a casual game. You'll be fine.

You know, I've had this for years and never played it. I might give it a go now I wont be the only new scrub running around.

I've had this for ages and played a fair bit hoping to like it more but never found it that fun really, perhaps its the servers i go on because most of the time it just feels really fast paced and spammy, you spawn and die and achieve very little, you can easily get a horrible k/d ratio, not that it matters.

I want to find a few good servers with different game modes, standard, sniper and maybe deathmatch as that would make more sense, unreal and quake were fast but you could actually get somewhere with them, with TF2 something isn't right.

I've racked up 350hours and counting.. Paid a tenner for the orange box. Only game together with halo that I routinely go back to..

This will get hacked to death now it's gone F2P, just like every other F2P game out there. Bad idea in my opinion, now we'll have all the cheating eurotrash and God knows what else ruining the game for everyone.
